During a recent episode of Spin’s ‘Artist X Artist,’ Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea revealed the band that opened a portal of inspiration for him. The episode showcased Flea in conversation with the members of the band he admires.

The bassist’s admiration was for no other than the post-punk band Bush Tetras. Giving one of their first shows in 1981, Bush Tetras performed outside of New York in L.A. at the Whisky A Go-Go for the first time, with Flea attending as a teenager and being a memorable experience for him.

Amid conversation with Bush Tetras’ Pat Place and Synthia Sley, he recalled the show he attended and said the following:

“It was a huge show for me. I was really blown away, and I’d never seen anything like it… It opened a portal for me is the best way to say, and the idea of how music could be put together.”

The bassist also revealed one of his influences being Bush Tetras for his sound in Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band’s influences consist of artists from jazz artists to punk artists, now with a new addition to the list of inspired artists.
