Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ended their nearly 40-year journey in the rock scene in 2017. They made this decision upon Tom Petty’s death. Although the band is no longer together, they have recorded material that they didn’t yet release, as Benmont Tench revealed in a recent interview with Kyle Meredith.
“We always recorded more than what we put out, but we always put out what we thought was the very best,” the keyboardist said, referring to material still in the vault and might eventually be made public. “But fairly often, I would wonder why a song had been left off the record. I hope it comes out because I think it’s cool, but there’s even more.”
In 2017, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers toured the States for their 40th anniversary. Just having wrapped up their gigs, bad news came from Tom Petty. He was found unconscious at home, not breathing, and suffering from full cardiac arrest. Nothing could be done to save him. He was 66 years old when he died.
Just a few days before he died, he had attended an interview with the Los Angeles Times where he said that if one of the Heartbreakers members died, the group would likely disband. And when he died a few days later, it really did. The band has not been performing since 2017. However, judging by what Tench said, they may surprise fans with collections of unreleased material. However, Ryan Ulyat, their producer, seems to be the decision-maker on this matter.
