Pearl Jam Guitarist Reveals The ‘True Kings Of Grunge’ And It’s Not Nirvana, Soundgarden Or Alice In Chains

Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard revealed his opinion on Mudhoney during a recent appearance on Rock This with Allison Hagendorf.
Mudhoney is an American band founded in 1988, featuring Mark Arm, Steve Turner, Guy Maddison, and Dan Peters. Since the beginning of their career, the band released eleven albums
In the conversation, Stone praised the music of Mudhoney and said that they are the true prototype of grunge music. Also, he mentioned that their music influenced so many musicians.
Instead of picking Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Alice In Chains for the best band in the grunge genre, Stone stunned the fans by saying that Mudhoney are the true kings of grunge music.
Here is what Stone Gossard said:
“I think Mudhoney really kind of, is really truly the, you know, the prototype grunge band. I mean, I think about their sound and I think that was the essence of sort of Sub Pop and so many bands being influenced by it because they were totally free.
And Green River, we got tight, you know, we started out aggressive and were really attacking. But we got tight and we started to think too much about what we were trying to be and who we wanted to be, what we want to do.
And Mudhoney, they weren’t thinking at all and they were letting it go. And Steve Turner was unleashed. So, you know, hats off to Mudhoney. They’re the true grunge kings for sure.”
