Despite being a pop star, Halsey is a big fan of metal music. Although her mainstream music career might not show it, she shared her love for the genre during previous interviews and through a few collaborations in the past. But, apparently there’s more to that side of hers than what meets the eye.
Halsey talked about her early experiences in the hardcore scene of New Jersey in a recent TikTok video of her chat with In Dissonant drummer Christian Leyva. “I mean, I super f*ck with hardcore music. I used to promote hardcore shows in Jersey before I started making music,” she shared.
“I did a lot of hardcore, but then also like, some of the more commercial hardcore,” the singer recalled. “The biggest show I ever booked, I was like 16 – the biggest show I ever booked was August Burns Red and The Devil Wears Prada. Like I said, a little more commercial. My senior-yearbook quote was a Defeater lyric. So, you guessed right, I was for sure a hardcore kid.”
Halsey carried that influence to her music back in 2019, working with Oli Sykes and Jordan Fish from Bring Me The Horizon on the track ‘Experiment on Me,’ which appeared on the ‘Birds of Prey’ soundtrack released in early 2020. Following this, she expressed a strong interest in making a rock album.
Her shift toward rock was evident in her 2021 release, ‘If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power,’ produced by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. This album included contributions from well-known musicians like Dave Grohl, Lindsey Buckingham, and Dave Sitek.
