His performance sparked fan speculation about him potentially joining the band as its new lead singer, following current frontman Arnel Pineda’s earlier remarks about not wanting to continue touring with Journey. The video’s caption describes Hugo staying on for an additional song during the performance in Tokyo.
“Hugo stays for another song.. Keep on Runnin’ with Journey in Tokyo Japan,” the fan who shared the video wrote in the caption.
Following the clip, several fans left comments expressing enthusiasm about Hugo Valenti’s appearance. Many voiced support for him to take on a larger role with the band.
“Go Hugo! It’s about time you played with Journey. Make it a full-time gig!” one fan commented.
Another fan referred to Hugo in connection with a different project. A third fan recalled seeing Journey perform with Pineda earlier this year and expressed openness to seeing the band with Hugo instead.
“The singer for the new band Journey Beyond,” another fan wrote.
“Saw them this year with Arnel. I’d go again if they bought Hugo,” a third fan added.
The reactions come amid ongoing questions about Journey’s future lineup, following Pineda’s previous comments about not wanting to continue touring with the band. No official announcement regarding a lineup change has been made.
Hugo Valenti’s appearance in Tokyo was not an isolated moment. Two nights earlier, on Saturday in Fukuoka, Journey brought him out for the first time to sing “Faithfully,” setting the stage for the buzz that followed him to Tokyo.
The Fukuoka show was itself a showcase of shared vocal duties. It featured a total of five singers across Journey’s twenty-song set, with Arnel Pineda leading most of the performance. That rotating format appears to have carried over into the Tokyo date, where Hugo joined a lineup that also included Pineda, drummer-turned-vocalist Deen Castronovo, keyboardist Jonathan Cain, and Jason Derlatka on backing vocals.
Hugo Valenti is not a newcomer to the Journey world. He has long fronted a Journey tribute act built around his uncanny vocal and physical resemblance to Steve Perry. He once auditioned for an opportunity to step into Perry’s shoes with the band, only to be told he looked too much like the original frontman for the role at the time.
Whether Journey’s decision to feature him twice in one weekend signals anything beyond a crowd-pleasing tribute moment remains unclear. The band has not issued any statement connecting Hugo’s appearances to Pineda’s future with the group. Both singers shared the stage together during the Tokyo show rather than one replacing the other.
For now, Hugo Valenti’s back-to-back appearances have done little to quiet fan speculation, even as Journey continues to feature Arnel Pineda as the primary voice of its Japan dates.
