Phoebe Bridgers recently sat down with NME and shared why Dave Grohl wasn’t featured on the Boygenius’ debut album, ‘The Record.’
At the Hollywood Bowl on Halloween, Boygenius performed and brought Grohl on stage to drum for ‘Satanist.’ The band members, Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker, wore costumes representing the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Grohl dressed in black with face paint, looking like a demon priest. When asked how the collaboration came about, Bridgers explained:
“I made friends with Dave backstage at a Billie Eilish show. He’s the coolest guy ever. I was texting the boys, being like, ‘I met Dave Grohl, and he exceeds every expectation of how a rock star can be in the world.’ I think we, as a group, look for that a lot – like, who is living their life the way that we want to get old and live our lives?”
Song Selection For Grohl To Play

When the interviewer wanted to learn who chose the song for Grohl to play on stage, Lucy said it was the band’s decision. Then Phoebe added, confirming her bandmate:
“Yeah, well, we also have a friend who knows him and toured with Foo Fighters, and there was this missed connection where Dave was actually going to come to the studio and play on [‘The Record’]. Then he slept through it or whatever, and we didn’t end up meeting. So it was actually kind of a perfect full circle moment of having him play on that song because we knew we wanted the drums to be crazy on that.”
Grammy Awards Showdown

At the upcoming 2024 Grammy Awards, Boygenius will be competing against Foo Fighters in rock categories. When asked about her feelings about it in a November chat with Billboard, Bridgers said:
“Pretty dope. I think we’re gonna have to fight Dave Grohl in the parking lot.”
Julien then suggested jokingly that they should dare Grohl to a playful confrontation. Following Julien’s comment, Lucy humorously added that she wouldn’t want to challenge Grohl because she’s seen how strongly he plays the drums and noticed his impressive arm muscles.
Last month, Boygenius got six nominations for the 2024 Grammy Awards. They are up for Album of the Year and Best Alternative Album for ‘The Record,’ Record of the Year, Best Rock Song, and Best Rock Performance for ‘Not Strong Enough,’ and Best Alternative Rock Performance for ‘Cool About It.’ ‘The Record’ is also nominated for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.
