Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt has confirmed that the band has completed work on its seventh studio album. He expressed unprecedented confidence about the new record in a recent interview on The Mistress Carrie Podcast.

Bettencourt discussed his recent creative process and the band’s ambitious plans for the upcoming release.

“[I’ve been in a] creative black hole over the last — I don’t know — year or so wrapping up an Extreme album,” Bettencourt said. “We’ve got about 18, 20 new tunes, and dare I say it’s the greatest album we’ve ever done — like every artist says.”

The guitarist outlined the band’s strategic release plan for the new material.

“What we’re trying to do is we’re hoping to drop the album — it probably has to be towards the end of the year, but we’re hoping to do a single per run, like maybe for the summer, for the Def Leppard [European] tour, maybe in June drop our first single, maybe for the Mötley [Crüe U.S. tour] drop a second single, just to get things excited,” he continued.

Bettencourt emphasized the significance of this album for the band’s career trajectory.

“It’s time for the fucking Super Bowl for us for real, as a band,” he said. “And this album — I told the [other] guys [in the band], ‘This album is everything for us. It’s everything. This is our career. The whole thing is this next f*cking album.’ So we have an opportunity to do something for ourselves — not for anybody else, for ourselves — and raise that f*cking bar for ourselves and let everybody know that we are a rock band.”

The guitarist concluded with his strongest endorsement of the new material.

“I’m telling you right now — I never get excited about anything, I don’t brag about anything, I don’t talk about stuff, but I cannot wait to play you [the new songs],” Bettencourt said. “Honestly, I think we did something on this album that is so much better than the last album. And what I mean by that is that we cracked the f*cking code. It only took 40 years, but we cracked the code.”

This upcoming release represents a significant milestone for the band. It comes three years after their previous effort and marks their continued evolution as artists.

Blabbermouth reported that the new album will follow the band’s 2023 release “Six” and is expected to arrive towards the end of 2026. The strategic timing aligns with the band’s major touring commitments, as they plan to build momentum throughout the year with carefully timed single releases.

The band’s approach to promoting the new material reflects a calculated strategy to maximize exposure during their high-profile tour dates. Blabbermouth noted that Extreme hopes to drop their first single in June during their European tour with Def Leppard. A second single will be timed with their U.S. summer tour alongside Mötley Crüe and Tesla.

Musically, Bettencourt has described the new material as representing a creative breakthrough for the band. Blabbermouth indicated that he characterized the sound as a “back-to-the-future version” of Extreme’s style. This combines the band’s authentic approach from their 1986-1987 origins with modern production values.

The guitarist further elaborated on the album’s distinctive sound. He described it as a “heavy, punch-somebody-in-the-fucking-balls funk version” that he believes will distinguish them from other contemporary acts. This intensive creative period culminated after Bettencourt spent approximately a year in what he described as a “creative black hole” while completing the project. This suggests the depth of focus and commitment invested in the new material.
