Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx addressed fan questions about the band’s future recording plans in a Q&A session on his X account. He revealed whether the band intends to release a new album with guitarist John 5, who replaced longtime member Mick Mars.
A fan directly asked Sixx about the possibility of new album material. This prompted him to share his current philosophy on releasing music.
“I believe in release songs. One at a time — not albums. Not at this time,” Sixx said. “We just released 3 new ones. Plus all the new songs on the Dirt soundtrack.”
Sixx went on to emphasize that the band has already delivered a substantial body of new work for fans to enjoy.
“Way more than an album’s worth,” he continued. “And they all got their own love.”
The comments suggest that new Mötley Crüe music is not off the table entirely. However, a traditional full-length album release is not currently in the band’s plans under the new lineup featuring John 5.
John 5 officially joined Mötley Crüe in the fall of 2022. He stepped in as the replacement for co-founding guitarist Mick Mars, who was forced to retire from touring due to his ongoing battle with ankylosing spondylitis, a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the spine. Mars had been a founding member of the band since its formation in 1981.
The transition was notably smooth. Sixx and drummer Tommy Lee personally invited John 5 — born John Lowery — to join the band without requiring an audition. They cited his deep familiarity with the band’s catalog and his long-standing friendship with its members. John 5 has spoken openly about his uncertainty regarding a full-length album, stating, “But whatever they do, I’ll be there,” signaling his full commitment to the band regardless of the direction they choose.
The Dirt soundtrack Sixx referenced is tied to the 2019 biographical film The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band, which chronicled the band’s turbulent rise to fame. The soundtrack featured new recordings from the band and has since been counted among their more recent musical output.
Mötley Crüe has continued releasing individual singles under the new lineup, reinforcing Sixx’s stated preference for a song-by-song release strategy over a conventional album rollout. That approach appears to be the band’s established model for the foreseeable future. It prioritizes individual releases that can each receive dedicated attention from fans rather than being bundled into a larger project.
