Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee Recalls The Time Vince Neil Bit Eddie Van Halen

Mötley Crüe is without a doubt one of the most popular metal bands in rock and metal history. Although, the band is known for its original sound, challenging lyrics, and unconventional stage performances, the band members are also famous for their shenanigans. As it turns out, the bandmates went through a ‘crazy biting phase’ in the mid-’80s and AC/DC’s Angus Young and Van Halen’s Eddie were two of their victims.

As you know, Mötley Crüe was founded back in 1981 and the band achieved international fame just a couple of years later. While some people enjoyed listening to their music, others took pleasure from following the band members’ backstage antics under the influence of alcohol and heavy drugs. Although they were known to be the biggest troublemakers, Mötley Crüe still got really good gigs.

In 1984, Mötley Crüe was a part of the ‘Monsters of Rock’ tour alongside AC/DC and Van Halen. However, that period also coincided with the band’s ‘crazy biting phase’ as Tommy Lee described it. Instead of using handshakes, high-fives, or hugs like other rockstars, Mötley Crüe members would show their love, affection, or happiness by biting others.

While touring with Van Halen, Vince Neil approached Eddie and started having a chat with him. However, everything changed when Vince Neil decided to bite the iconic guitarist’s hand, who didn’t appreciate this at all and shouted ‘What the f*ck is wrong with you?’ and stormed out. This almost got Mötley Crüe thrown out of the Van Halen tour, which really upset their manager Doc McGhee. However, it seems like this didn’t teach them a lesson as Tommy Lee went on to bite AC/DC’s Malcolm Young who ‘hated it too.’

Here’s what Tommy Lee said about that phase to USA Today:

“Motley had this thing we would do if we really loved you: Some people high-five, other people hug. We would bite you.”

And this is how he described the biting incident:

“Vince went over and just chomped on Eddie, and Eddie was so mad. He was like, ‘What the f*ck is wrong with you?‘”

This is what Nikki Sixx said about what their manager told them after Vince bit Eddie’s hand:

“I remember Doc [McGhee] came to us and he goes, ‘Good job, assholes, I think you’re getting thrown off the Van Halen tour.”

Tommy Lee also revealed that:

I bit Malcolm Young, and he hated it too. We did that for a couple of years until we were either over it or realized it might be a little dangerous.”
