Mikkey Dee recently spoke about his impact on the Scorpions, claiming he played a key role in making the band heavier.
The drummer has been with the Scorpions for a decade. He explained his philosophy on playing and what he set out to bring to the band from the very beginning.
“I will never play with a band sitting behind there and just tap away their music. That’s not me. I like to add something to the band,” Dee said.
He went on to describe the direct conversation he had with his bandmates about his intentions for their sound.
“I told the Scorpions guys, I said, ‘I’m going to motorize you guys as good as I can,'” he continued. “Let’s make it heavier, together and let’s have way more fun. Let’s bring it back and make it f*cking heavy here and let’s motorize ourselves.”
Dee expressed confidence that his contributions made a tangible difference for the group. “I feel that I did that, I did make a difference for this band,” he said.
Dee’s journey with the Scorpions did not begin as a permanent arrangement. He initially stepped in as a fill-in drummer in March 2016, replacing James Kottak, who had stepped away from the band to undergo rehabilitation for alcohol and substance dependencies. What started as a temporary role quickly evolved into something more lasting.
Dee was officially announced as a permanent member of the German hard rock group in September 2016. His arrival brought with him a reputation built over decades at the highest level of heavy music. He had previously served as the drummer for both King Diamond and Motörhead, the latter of which cemented his status as one of rock’s most powerful and relentless players.
That Motörhead pedigree was never far from his mind when he joined the Scorpions. “I told them that I was going to motorise their f*cking band, and I’ve been doing my damnedest to do just that ever since,” Dee said.
Dee also made clear early on that his standards for live performance were non-negotiable. He told the Scorpions directly that he does not make mistakes on stage. It was a declaration they initially laughed off, only for him to prove it over the course of a decade on the road together.
Beyond his work with the Scorpions, Dee has remained active on multiple fronts. In 2026, he announced a series of European shows celebrating the music of Motörhead. He will perform the band’s classic catalog alongside members of The Drippers. The run of dates underscores his enduring connection to the legacy of the band that defined much of his career before his decade-long chapter with the Scorpions began.
