Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy publicly praised Anika Nilles following Rush’s first reunion show. He shared his thoughts in a message posted on Instagram.

Portnoy’s message focused on Nilles’ performance at The Forum in Inglewood, CA, where she made her debut as Rush’s new drummer. He expressed his admiration for how she handled the emotional weight of the occasion and honored the band’s legacy.

“You absolutely NAILED IT!! I cannot fathom the emotions that you must’ve been feeling…just watching on YouTube I had goosebumps and tears throughout the entire show!” Portnoy said.

He went on to highlight how Nilles paid tribute to the band and its history throughout the performance.

“You honored Neil, Geddy and Alex (and the music and the fans) with every ounce of your being and I am so happy they chose you!” he continued. “Can’t wait to witness this in person sometime this summer…Huge Congrats Anika!”

Portnoy’s endorsement reflects the broader significance of the night — a moment that carried deep emotional weight for the band, its fans, and the wider rock community.

Portnoy previously said about not being picked as Neil Peart’s replacement for the reuion tour, “Well, I mean, I’d be lying if I denied that, of course, playing with those guys would be a dream come true. And, you know, I love and respect not only Rush’s music, but Neil Peart as a person and as a drummer.”

He continued, “So I would, you know, if the hypothetical scenario ever occurred that they had to ask me, I would have approached it with the utmost respect, believe me. But, you know, in a way, I’m kind of relieved they didn’t ask me because that’s a very tough role to get into.”

Anika Nilles is a German drummer and educator who has built a strong international following through her solo work, online performances, and drumming clinics. Her technical precision and expressive playing style made her a respected figure in the drumming world long before her name was linked to Rush. Her selection as the band’s new drummer drew widespread attention, with many in the music community watching closely to see how she would handle one of rock’s most demanding catalogs.

The reunion show at The Forum marked Rush’s first major return to the live stage in years. Nilles’ debut was all the more significant because the band had largely stepped back from touring following the death of Neil Peart in January 2020. The Inglewood show represented a new chapter for Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson. For longtime fans, seeing Rush perform again — with a new drummer behind the kit — was both a celebration and an act of remembrance.

Peart passed away after a private battle with brain cancer. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest drummers in rock history. His intricate compositions and deeply personal lyrics defined Rush’s sound for decades, and his absence has loomed large over any discussion of the band’s future. Filling his seat was never going to be a straightforward task. The choice of Nilles signaled that Lee and Lifeson were committed to honoring that legacy with care.

Portnoy’s public endorsement adds to the positive reception surrounding Nilles’ debut, with the band’s summer tour still ahead. For a drummer stepping into one of rock’s most iconic roles, the support from a peer of Portnoy’s stature carries real weight. It suggests that Nilles has already earned the respect of the drumming community at the highest level.
