Michael Sweet, frontman of the rock band Stryper, recently addressed criticism surrounding the band’s new song and video “On This Holy Night” in a statement shared on Facebook.

The song and its accompanying video sparked concerns from some listeners who questioned the band’s artistic direction and messaging. Sweet took to social media to directly address several specific criticisms about the release.

Sweet explained the creative intent behind the Halloween imagery in the video: “So, to answer a few questions/concerns about the new song/video, ‘On This Holy Night’: 1 – ’The video has Halloween imagery’: Well, that’s the whole point. How Christmas has become a marketing scheme, and since we released it on Halloween, it made sense to do a video like this. No, we do not celebrate Halloween, and no, we are not satanists.”

Sweet also responded to concerns about the song’s darker musical tone. “2 – ‘The song sounds evil’: We wanted to make it a little darker musically, and we are glad we did,” he stated. “We are not witches or warlocks.”

The frontman addressed additional questions about the band’s musical approach with characteristic humor. “3 – ‘Why isn’t Robert doing a drum solo throughout the entire song?’: Well, we thought about that, and although we realize that Robert is ‘The Visual Timekeeper,’ he’s not Neil Peart,” Sweet said. He also addressed the absence of high screams: “4 – ‘Why isn’t there a classic high scream anywhere in the song?’: Well, Michael forgot to buy helium and bring his tight pants to the studio.”

Sweet concluded by clarifying the band’s identity: “5 – ‘Why isn’t it fast and thrashy?’: We are not a thrash band. We are a glam band.”

The controversy surrounding “On This Holy Night” reflects the band’s deliberate artistic choices for their upcoming Christmas project. Blabbermouth reported that the new single describes how “the world has taken Jesus out of Christmas,” serving as a thematic centerpiece for the band’s holiday work.

Antimusic noted that “On This Holy Night” was released on October 31, 2025, as a lead single from Stryper’s upcoming Christmas album The Greatest Gift of All. The album is scheduled for release on November 21, 2025, via Frontiers Music Srl. The strategic Halloween release date was intentional, aligning the song’s dark and heavy musical style with the album’s deeper message about commercialism and the loss of spiritual meaning in modern Christmas celebrations.

The album represents a significant project for the legendary Christian metal band. Frontiers Music detailed that The Greatest Gift of All will feature a mix of five traditional Christmas classics and five original songs, including “On This Holy Night.” The project reunites founding members Robert Sweet on drums and Oz Fox on guitar, alongside bassist Perry Richardson. This lineup showcases the band’s commitment to delivering both classic holiday favorites and new material that challenges conventional Christmas music expectations.

By releasing a darker, heavier track on Halloween as a preview of their Christmas album, Stryper has clearly signaled their intention to offer an alternative perspective on holiday music. This perspective addresses spiritual themes rather than commercial sentimentality. Sweet’s detailed responses to fan concerns demonstrate the band’s willingness to engage directly with their audience and explain their artistic vision, even when it provokes debate within their fanbase.
