Stryper frontman Michael Sweet recently opened up about his vocal challenges following his cancer diagnosis. He shared his future plans for the band in an interview with Jorge Botas.

Sweet discussed his current vocal limitations and his thoughtful approach to the band’s future should his condition worsen.

“And I’m not in my best voice these days. I’m not at 100%. But I feel I can still pull off some of this stuff to a degree and I’m thankful for that,” Sweet said.

The veteran musician emphasized his commitment to maintaining the band’s reputation and legacy above personal considerations.

“I don’t feel that I’m at that point yet where I need to hang it up as a singer. But, you know, I will say this. If I ever get to that point where I’m going out on stage and embarrassing the band and myself and and the legacy of the band, if there is one, I’m not going to sing anymore,” he continued.

Sweet outlined his potential transition plan. This would see him focus solely on guitar duties while bringing in new vocal talent.

“I’m going to just play. I’ll play guitar and we’ll get some young singer who can who can hit all the notes and then he can worry about it. I don’t have to worry about anymore,” he explained.

Sweet’s health concerns stem from a recent medical diagnosis that has significantly impacted his vocal abilities and future planning for the band.

Blabbermouth reported that Sweet has been diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer, the most common type of thyroid cancer. The diagnosis explains the vocal struggles he has been experiencing and adds context to his candid discussion about potentially stepping back from singing duties.

Metal Wani revealed that Sweet has noticed vocal issues over the past 10 years due to thyroid nodules. These have progressively affected his singing ability. The singer has been managing these challenges while continuing to perform with Stryper, demonstrating his dedication to the band despite his health struggles.

The timing of Sweet’s revelation is particularly significant. Blunt Magazine noted that he plans to undergo surgery to remove the nodule after recording starts on December 28. This surgical procedure will be crucial for his recovery and may determine the extent to which his vocal abilities can be restored.

Sweet remains optimistic about his treatment prospects and the band’s future despite the challenges. His pragmatic approach to potentially bringing in a new singer reflects both his commitment to Stryper’s legacy and his realistic assessment of his health situation. This candid discussion demonstrates Sweet’s maturity as both an artist and leader, prioritizing the band’s continued success over personal ego.
