Megadeth has achieved their first-ever No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart after nearly 40 years in the music industry, as reported by Billboard. The metal band’s new self-titled album also marks their expected final studio album. It debuted atop the chart dated February 7.
Dave Mustaine expressed his gratitude for reaching this milestone with what is expected to be the band’s final record.
“After 40 years of delivering Megadeth music, playing shows around the world, I have nothing but gratitude at this moment,” Mustaine said. “Finding out that our last Megadeth record is also our first No. 1 only further validates my will to go out on top.”
The frontman also took the opportunity to thank those who contributed to the band’s success.
“Thank you to my family, Teemu Mäntysaari, James LoMenzo, Dirk Verbueren and Chris Rakestraw, all our fans for making this possible,” he continued. “Without you Megadeth would not be as successful as we are. I’d also like to thank the people behind the scenes, our management, Danny Nozell, Justis Mustaine, and Steve Ross at CTK, and our label BLKIIBLK/Tradecraft.”
Billboard reported that Megadeth made their chart debut in 1986. The band has placed 23 albums on the Billboard 200 throughout their career, with their previous highest position being No. 2 with 1992’s “Countdown to Extinction.”
The commercial success of this final album reflects the band’s enduring appeal. It marks a significant milestone in their storied career.
Blabbermouth noted that the self-titled “Megadeth” album earned 73,000 equivalent album units in the United States during its opening week. 69,000 of those came from pure album sales. This represents the band’s biggest sales week in their four-decade career, demonstrating the strong loyalty of their fanbase even as they prepare to close this chapter.
The album itself carries special significance beyond its chart position. 98 KUPD revealed that the record was co-produced by Mustaine and Chris Rakestraw. It follows 2022’s “The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead!” The album notably features a cover of Metallica’s “Ride the Lightning,” adding an intriguing element to what serves as the band’s final studio offering.
Megadeth’s journey to this No. 1 achievement spans an impressive legacy in heavy metal. Hennemusic confirmed that the band formed by Mustaine in 1983 has sold over 50 million records worldwide throughout their career. This commercial milestone comes as the thrash metal pioneers prepare for their farewell tour. The tour is scheduled to begin February 15 in Canada.
The timing of this achievement adds poetic justice to Megadeth’s career arc. They reach their highest commercial peak just as they prepare to bid farewell to their recording career. The band’s ability to capture the top spot after nearly four decades in the industry underscores their lasting impact on the metal genre and their dedicated global following.
