Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy shared an emotional message about losing his stepmom Trish Portnoy’s passing after facing many losses in 2025 with the deaths of his sister, his dog and his father-in-law. This was reported on Instagram.
The drummer posted a heartfelt tribute following the recent loss of another family member.
“Yesterday I awoke to the horrible news that my dear stepmom Trish Portnoy passed away peacefully at her home in Carmel CA,” Mike Portnoy said.
He continued to express his grief while finding comfort in the reunion of his loved ones.
“We are all heartbroken. But find some peace in knowing that she and my father Howard are finally reunited again,” he continued. “Last night in Kuala Lumpur, The Spirit Carries On was for her.”
This latest loss adds to what has been a difficult year for the musician. He has already faced multiple family tragedies in 2025.
The emotional tribute reflects Portnoy’s deep connection to family. This has been a recurring theme throughout his career and personal life.
Wikipedia noted that Portnoy hails from Maplewood, New Jersey, where he developed his passion for music before becoming one of progressive metal’s most influential drummers. His hometown in Essex County served as the foundation for his musical journey that would eventually lead him to co-found Dream Theater in 1985.
The reference to “The Spirit Carries On” in his tribute holds special significance. This Dream Theater song has become synonymous with themes of loss and remembrance. The band performed this emotional piece during their concert in Kuala Lumpur as a dedication to his late stepmother. This demonstrates how music continues to serve as Portnoy’s outlet for processing grief.
Family dynamics and personal struggles have long influenced artists across various genres. Wikipedia reported that similar themes appear in nu metal, where bands like Korn have explored complex family relationships in their music. Frontman Jonathan Davis wrote songs about difficult childhood experiences with stepfamily members.
Portnoy’s public sharing of his grief highlights the universal nature of family loss and the healing power of music. His ability to channel personal pain into artistic expression has been a hallmark of his career, both with Dream Theater and his various other musical projects throughout the years.
