Matt Cameron recently opened up about his departure from Pearl Jam. He explained his decision to leave the iconic rock band in a statement covered by Billboard.

The drummer addressed his reasons for stepping away from the band. He focused on his desire for a different artistic direction and performance style.

“I was having some issues with (Pearl Jam’s) three-hour shows and constant touring and stuff,” Cameron said. “That’s definitely an art form unto itself, to be able to do those types of shows.”

Cameron explained his current artistic vision and how it differs from Pearl Jam’s approach.

“I’m at a point now where I want to do a face-melting 70-minute set, and that’s kind of what I’m focusing on right now,” he continued. “I’m at a point in my life where I want to redirect my time and energy in a way that is a little bit based on what I want to pursue as an artist at this point.”

The drummer also addressed his relationship with his former bandmates following the departure.

“I definitely gave them a lot of notice. I’ve spoken with Jeff (Ament) and Stone (Gossard) a little bit,” Cameron said. “It’s been fine. Hopefully we’ll get back together at some point and have a beer or something.”

Cameron’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter in Pearl Jam’s history. He served as the band’s primary drummer for over two decades.

Modern Drummer reported that Cameron’s departure ends a 27-year tenure with Pearl Jam. During this time, he was a foundational member of the band’s rhythm section. He contributed to every release since Binaural in 2000 and shaped countless live performances that became legendary among rock fans worldwide.

Both Cameron and Pearl Jam released official statements expressing mutual respect and gratitude for their long collaboration. Pearl Jam Online noted that the band called him “a singular and true powerhouse of a musician and drummer” who “propelled the last 27 years of Pearl Jam live shows and studio recordings.”

Pearl Jam’s statement continued with heartfelt appreciation for their longtime collaborator. “He will be deeply missed and is forever our friend in art and music,” the band said. This highlighted the personal bonds that extended beyond their professional relationship.

Drummer World revealed that while the news marks a major transition for Pearl Jam, the band has only one show scheduled for the remainder of 2025. Cameron’s next musical moves remain unknown. However, his storied career and distinctive style suggest more creative ventures ahead.

The drummer’s decision reflects a broader trend among veteran musicians seeking to balance artistic fulfillment with personal well-being as they navigate the later stages of their careers.
