Klaus Meine’s Condition Worsens: Scorpions Cancel Another Show

Scorpions have canceled their May 3 concert at Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa in Quito, Ecuador, due to frontman Klaus Meine’s ongoing health issues. The band announced that Meine, who will turn 77 later this month, has not recovered from the virus that led to previous cancellations in Buenos Aires (April 26) and Bogotá (April 30). He has now been diagnosed with bacterial bronchitis, rendering him unable to perform.

In a statement, Scorpions expressed deep regret and disappointment, apologizing to fans in Ecuador and promising to make every effort to return to South America in the future.

Meine’s health challenges have impacted the band’s 60th-anniversary tour, which began in March with shows in Mexico, Brazil, and Chile. Earlier this year, the band also postponed their Las Vegas residency due to drummer Mikkey Dee’s recovery from sepsis. Despite these setbacks, SCORPIONS plan to resume their tour in Mexico on May 6 and continue with European dates in June and July, followed by a U.S. return in August.

In a 2017 interview, Meine discussed the physical demands of performing, noting that age has led the band to adjust their touring schedule and modify song arrangements to accommodate his vocal range.

While the band had previously considered retirement, Meine stated in a 2022 interview that they had “scratched that word out of our vocabulary,” emphasizing their commitment to continue performing as long as they can.

Scorpions’ latest album, Rock Believer, was released in February 2022, showcasing their enduring presence in the rock music scene.

Fans are hopeful for Meine’s swift recovery and the band’s return to the stage.
