In late 2023, Kiko Loureiro left Megadeth, pointing to family matters for his decision. After his departure, the band chose Teemu Mäntysaari as the new guitarist for their upcoming 2024 concerts. But Loureiro recently revealed to Guitar World that he initially wanted to be replaced by Marty Friedman:
“Actually, I even mentioned to management and Dave that I thought bringing Marty Friedman back would be amazing. I have no idea if they’re talking about it or talking to him, but I did say that. But again, I have no idea beyond that, and I don’t want to make anything more complicated.”
Megadeth’s New Lineup

Friedman briefly rejoined Megadeth for a special show in Tokyo, marking his first performance with the band in 23 years. This led to speculation about him rejoining the band permanently, but Dave Mustaine later announced that they would go on with the 36-year-old guitarist from Wintersun.
His statement about Megadeth’s 2024 lineup read:
“We have had many conversations with Kiko about this, and they have all been very positive. Kiko is going to remain on an extended leave of absence due to our heavy touring commitments next year, and we are going to continue to move forward with Teemu Mäntysaari as the guitar player for Megadeth.”
Mustaine’s Regret About Friedman’s Departure

Marty Friedman left the band in 2000 after their managers failed to inform him about re-recording a guitar solo in ‘Breadline’ from the ‘Risk’ album. Mustaine expressed regret about the incident shortly before their reunion show in Tokyo. He told Guitar World:
“What happened to Marty was definitely not okay. Our management was supposed to tell him, and for whatever reason, they didn’t do it. I think that was a terrible thing to do to him.”
The future collaborations between Friedman and Megadeth remain uncertain, with the band set to start their 2024 tour with their new guitarist, Teemu Mäntysaari.
