Elton John Says The New Generation Of Musicians’ Ability To Tour Is At Risk
In a recent post on Instagram, Sir Elton John shared his thoughts about the new statement of the DCMS (Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport), considering the government’s approach to easing Covid-19 restrictions.
As DCMS is the governmental department of the United Kingdom government that is responsible for culture and sport, this means that they are the ones who decide whether there will be any restrictions during music events. Recently, the authorities announced that the United Kingdom has agreed with 19 European countries to give permission to the British musicians to travel without any visa issues for short-term tours.
Following the statement, Elton revealed his reaction on social media and stated that he is disappointed as he thinks that it is not a long-term solution. As he said, they needed to be more clear about the future of the industry and they should have given emerging artists the ability to tour.
Besides that, Elton believes that this is a temporary solution that could turn into a big problem in the future. Furthermore, the Rocket Man mentioned that there is still a chance to make it right and pointed out that there must be solutions for the short and long-term events. Otherwise, the future of the new generation of musicians will be at risk.
Here is what Elton John said about DCMS’ announcement:
“On initially being informed about the latest announcement from the DCMS, my excitement soon turned to disappointment after realizing it seems to be just a rehash of what we already know.
There needs to be far more clarity on exactly what progress has been made. There is a small window of opportunity to get this right to ensure the next generation of musicians and emerging artists have the ability to tour.
Speed is of the utmost importance. We need to sustain momentum to enforce change. There must be solutions, short and long term, or we risk losing future generations of world beating talent.”
