Justin Hawkins Thinks Phil Anselmo Should Do The Pantera Reunion Under A Different Name
Justin Hawkins recently uploaded another video as part of his ‘Justin Hawkins Rides Again’ YouTube series. In the video, Hawkins argued that Phil Anselmo should reunite Pantera using a different name.
In 2000, Pantera released their ninth and final record, ‘Reinventing The Steel.’ After promoting it with a tour, the band went on hiatus in 2001. They then released their compilation album, ‘The Best of Pantera: Far Beyond the Great Southern Cowboys’ Vulgar Hits!’ in 2003 but disbanded later that year due to a communication breakdown, tensions between the Abbott brothers and Anselmo, and accusations that Anselmo neglected Pantera due to other side projects he continued to work on.
In December 2004, something tragic happened. Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed on stage by a fan during a Damageplan show in Columbus, Ohio. Anselmo didn’t attend Darrell’s funeral out of the guitarist’s request because of his harsh words against him and the claims that the murderer killed Darrell because of Pantera’s disbandment.
For these reasons, Anselmo was at odds with Vinnie Paul. Although he wanted a reconciliation, Paul passed away on June 22, 2018. In July 2022, Anselmo announced the Pantera reunion tour with Rex Brown, along with Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante, who would fill in for Darrell and Paul. Taking place in 2023, it will be Pantera’s first world tour in 22 years.
In a recent episode of his Justin Hawkins Rides Again YouTube series, Justin Hawkins said Pantera should reunite but not use the Pantera name. He then came up with new band names like ‘Pentaro’ and ‘Tanpera’ for the band and argued this situation leaves a bad taste in the mouth due to the issues between Vinnie Paul and Phil Anselmo.
Here is what Justin Hawkins said about the Pantera reunion:
“They should do it, but I think they should call it something else. It’d be great to see Zakk Wylde playing Pantera songs. I think that’s an awesome idea. But it should be called Pentaro. You know, jumble with letters up a little bit. Tanpera? Tanpera. I don’t know.
There’s something about this situation leaving a bad taste in the mouth, isn’t it? I think it’s all because of Vinnie Paul’s relationship with Phil Anselmo. Or maybe personal growth has occurred. This is what I love; a few years passed, and you have all those traumatic experiences together and separately.”
He then continued:
“Maybe the tribute should reflect that. Maybe let’s call it something simple like A Tribute To Pantera featuring Zakk Wylde. Oh no, it should be Fan Pantera or the way Queen did, Pantera, Zakk Wylde, and Charlie Benante. That’s what they should do.”
