Jonathan Cain recently opened up about his decision to leave Journey after their upcoming two-year tour in a statement shared on The 700 Club.
Cain explained that his choice was influenced by personal priorities and the demanding nature of life on the road. He emphasized his gratitude to the fans and his intention to give a proper farewell.
“Yeah, it’s actually gonna be two years. It’s time for me, at my age. I wanna live my life, and the road just is so consuming and it just seems like a good time to get off, for me,” Cain said. “And I just love our fans, and I wanna do it in a proper farewell, to say goodbye.”
He also shared details about the tour’s schedule and his excitement to connect with fans one last time.
“So it should be a lot of fun. We’re starting up in Pennsylvania, going to Canada and around. And, of course, we have another year. So it’ll be spread out over two years. I think they added Japan; we’re going to Japan. And there’s a Hawaii run. But we’ll get to see the fans one more time and I’ll get to say thank you and I’m grateful,” he continued.
Cain’s farewell tour with Journey will span multiple locations. It will give fans a final opportunity to see him perform with the band.
The announcement of Cain’s departure comes as part of Journey’s “Final Frontier” farewell tour, which will run from 2026 to 2027. According to Ultimate Classic Rock, the tour will feature 60 shows across the United States and Canada. It will begin on February 28, 2026, in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and conclude on July 2 in Laredo, Texas.
Cain, who joined Journey in 1980, has been a key contributor to the band’s success. He co-wrote iconic hits like “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Faithfully,” and “Open Arms.” However, as he revealed in an interview on the Strang Report podcast, his decision to leave stems from a personal calling to focus on ministry and worship work. “I feel a calling there,” Cain stated. He highlighted his plans to transition into a new chapter of his life.
The decision also follows years of internal tensions within the band, particularly between Cain and guitarist Neal Schon. As reported by Blabbermouth, the two resolved legal disputes over band finances in 2024. Schon recently confirmed that the band is “on the same page” as they prepare for the farewell tour.
Despite his departure, Cain remains committed to the upcoming tour. He described it as a heartfelt goodbye to fans. As noted by Consequence, Journey will continue performing after Cain’s exit. Schon emphasized that the band’s legacy will endure.
Cain’s farewell marks the end of an era for Journey. It also serves as a celebration of his contributions to the band’s storied history. Fans can look forward to an unforgettable tour as Cain bids a proper goodbye to the stage and the audience that has supported him for decades.
