Stryper frontman Michael Sweet has shared a public message of support for Journey singer Arnel Pineda, following speculation about a possible lineup change. The rumors surfaced after Journey brought out Steve Perry lookalike singer Hugo Valenti for a guest performance during their Japan show on the ongoing Final Frontier Tour. This prompted fans to question whether Valenti could eventually replace Pineda, especially since Valenti had previously said he did not want to tour with Journey.
Sweet’s statement addressed his admiration for Journey and Pineda’s contributions to the band, emphasizing both Pineda’s vocal talent and his role as a performer.
“I’m a huge Journey fan,” Sweet said. “Always have been. Steve Perry is in my top 5 vocalists of all time. Arnel Pineda is in my top 10 of all time.”
“I just wanted to express how amazing Arnel has been with Journey,” Sweet continued. “Not only as a vocalist, but also (and equally as important), as a front man. Arnel is on fire. What an outstanding job he has done and he’s brought so much to the Journey name/brand. Much Love & Respect, Arnel.”
Pineda responded directly to Sweet’s post, thanking him for the gesture.
“So kind of you my dear friend,” Pineda wrote. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Sending you and all the believers peace and love.”
Sweet’s message lands against a backdrop of nearly two decades of Pineda fronting Journey. That run has made him one of the most enduring frontmen in the band’s history and offers useful context for why the recent Japan appearances stirred such a strong reaction.
Pineda has led Journey since 2007. He was discovered performing the band’s songs on YouTube and brought in to replace Steve Perry, whose retirement had left the group searching for a new voice. That nearly 20-year tenure has made him the band’s longest-serving frontman aside from Perry himself. This track record stands in sharp contrast to the sudden speculation triggered by a pair of guest appearances.
The controversy began in Fukuoka, Japan, where Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain invited Hugo Valenti onstage to perform “Faithfully.” Two days later, Journey brought Valenti out a second time in Tokyo, where he sang both “Faithfully” and “Keep on Runnin’,” as reported by Rolling Stone. In both instances, Pineda remained the primary vocalist for the bulk of the set. Drummer Deen Castronovo also stepped in on lead vocals for “Lights” and “Anytime.”
Despite the online chatter, nothing about the Japan shows suggested an official change to Journey’s lineup. Pineda handled the majority of the setlist during both performances. Valenti’s role was limited to a handful of guest songs rather than a full takeover of frontman duties.
Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain has announced he will leave the band following the conclusion of the Final Frontier Tour to focus on a Christian solo EP titled “Only a Prayer Away.” This adds another layer to the lineup speculation. Cain’s planned departure means the band is already navigating one confirmed personnel change even as it works to quiet rumors about another.
The exchange between Sweet and Pineda comes as fans continue to speculate about the future of Journey’s lineup. No official statement regarding a lineup change involving Pineda has been made by the band.
