John Lydon has criticized the current Sex Pistols lineup featuring Frank Carter. He called it a “dumbed-down tribute act” in a recent interview with Louder Sound.

The Sex Pistols frontman shared his thoughts on Carter’s involvement with the band when asked about the current lineup.

Lydon expressed his disapproval of the arrangement when questioned about “Frank Carter’s ‘Sex Pistols’.”

“It’s weird,” Lydon said. “A dumbing down of all the integrity, intensity, genuine honesty and heartfelt emotions I put into that band.”

He continued his critique while acknowledging Carter’s approach to the role.

“Of course, it’s karaoke, but it’s like… Come on, Mr Carter, you’re not Johnny Rotten, I am,” he said. “Right? Stop it. Though I actually think he took it on in the right spirit.”

Lydon also referenced previous collaborations involving former Sex Pistols members.

“The same spirit Billy Idol did before [Idol toured with Steve Jones and Paul Cook as Generation Sex in ’23],” he said. “Poor Billy, he ran out of wind. He can’t sing them songs.”

The comments highlight ongoing tensions surrounding the use of the Sex Pistols name and legacy.

The current Sex Pistols lineup has been actively performing and gaining recognition in the music scene despite Lydon’s harsh criticism.

Exit Festival described Frank Carter as “tattooed and charged with energy.” Critics noted he didn’t join to simply replace anyone but to “shake up the world.” The publication emphasized that Carter is credited with redefining the band. He captivates audiences with his electrifying stage presence and wide-eyed intensity, distinctly different from Johnny Rotten’s sneer.

The current lineup features Carter alongside original Sex Pistols members Steve Jones, Paul Cook, and Glen Matlock. Concert Archives reported this configuration has been actively touring since mid-2024. They perform the band’s seminal album “Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols” in its entirety at festivals and venues worldwide.

The band’s recent touring schedule has been extensive, including appearances at major festivals. Setlist FM documented their performance at the 2025 Download Festival. They completed an Australian tour in April 2025, demonstrating the lineup’s continued commercial viability despite Lydon’s disapproval.

Frank Carter brings his own punk credentials to the role. He is known for his work with Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes. Wikipedia noted Carter has established himself as a prominent figure in the modern punk scene. This makes his involvement with the Sex Pistols a notable collaboration between punk generations.
