John Lennon’s Last Words Before He Passed Away

Many rock legends tragically passed away, such as Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, Metallica’s Cliff Burton, Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrel, and many more. Since each of these musicians is irreplaceable, their death left the world with great pain and the need to know everything about their passing. The death cause, murder weapon, crime scene, and many more have always been subjects of curiosity for their fans due to their admiration for their favorite rocker.

One of these musicians is the Beatles icon John Lennon as many fans consider the day that he died as the day the music died, which is why his passing may be one of the most devastating ones. The brilliant musician left this word untimely and unexpectedly when he was murdered at the young age of 40. Today, we’re here to break down the brief story of his passing as well as the last words the singer said before leaving his fans, family, and friends.

John Lennon Was Tragically Murdered

On December 8, 1980, John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono left The Dakota for a recording session at the Record Plant without knowing that he just autographed a copy of ‘Double Fantasy’ for his future murderer, Mark David Chapman. The man was actually a Beatles fan who was angered by Lennon’s lifestyle and was filled with rage because the musician said the band was ‘more popular than Jesus.’

Everything seemed fine when the couple was returning to their Manhattan apartment in a limousine following the end of the recording session. Little did they know, David Chapman was waiting for them to return to their house as they exited the vehicle and walked through the archway of the building.

That’s when the gunshots were heard, and Chapman shot Lennon twice in the back and twice in the shoulder at close range as he was planning the murder over several months before the incident. The Beatle’s murderer remained at the scene reading ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ by J. D. Salinger until he was arrested since he was inspired by the character in the novel.

The musician was rushed in a police cruiser to the emergency room of Roosevelt Hospital as he was attempted to resuscitate multiple times after it was realized that the singer wasn’t breathing and had no pulse. Unfortunately, the damage created by the bullets was too great therefore, John Lennon was pronounced dead on arrival at 11:15 p.m. at the age of 40, on December 8, 1980.

What Was The Last Thing John Lennon Said?

Pretty much every detail of the Beatles singer’s death is precisely determined ,from the damage in his left lung and major blood vessels above his heart to the fact that the Beatles song ‘All My Loving’ came over the hospital’s sound system at the moment Lennon was pronounced dead.

There’s one thing that isn’t known for certain since the speculations vary from one source to another; the last words John Lennon said before he passed away. Many people believe that his last words were, ‘I’m shot!’ before the musician was able to walk the five or six steps into the security office just inside the archway of the building where he collapsed.

On the other hand, according to an interview with one of the two policemen rushing him to Roosevelt Hospital, these weren’t the musician’s last words. The two policemen wanted to keep the Beatle awake and asked him questions such as his name. According to their statements, Lennon answered and said, ‘yeah’ before passing away.

As expected, there’s no way to prove that these are the last words of the rock icon since the two policemen’s statement is questionable because John Lennon most likely lost consciousness due to his injuries almost immediately. As a result, the common belief surrounding the last words of Lennon remains as ‘I’m shot,’ which makes his murder even more heartbreaking.
