Metallica frontman James Hetfield’s ex-wife Francesca recently addressed fake news circulating about her health. She shared her response on Instagram.

Francesca Hetfield took to social media to respond to false reports claiming she had passed away. She shared screenshots of the fabricated news articles.

“Crazy to think that people have so much time on their hands that they create fake news,” she said. “Anyone else read about themselves passing away?”

The fake news articles she shared included headlines such as “Breaking News, Just 30 minutes ago, James Hetfield’s family confirmed some heartbreaking news. Hi ex-wife Francesca Hetfield has passed away.”

Francesca’s direct response highlights the ongoing issue of misinformation spreading on social media platforms. This particularly affects celebrities and their families.

This incident is part of a troubling trend affecting the music industry. Snopes reported that death hoaxes targeting musicians’ families or ex-partners have become increasingly common. These are often fueled by bots, clickbait sites, and AI-generated fake content. The fact-checking organization has documented a 300% rise in music-related hoaxes since 2024.

James and Francesca Hetfield were married in 1997 after meeting in 1993. They shared four children together. Billboard noted that the couple separated in 2013 after 17 years of marriage. James filed for divorce in 2016 citing irreconcilable differences. The divorce was finalized in late 2018 without public acrimony. Francesca received primary custody of their younger children and their Marin County, California home.

Despite their divorce, James has spoken positively about Francesca in recent interviews. In a 2023 Metallica podcast, he called her a “great mom.” This demonstrates the respectful relationship they maintain for their children’s sake. Post-divorce, Francesca has maintained a low profile. She focuses on family, horses, and faith-based activities through her private Instagram account.

The recent death hoax follows a pattern of similar incidents targeting other music industry figures. Rolling Stone documented recent examples including false reports about Taylor Swift’s mother Andrea Swift in February 2026, Sharon Osbourne in November 2025, and Noah Cyrus in July 2025. These incidents often correlate with AI tools generating realistic fake articles. This makes it increasingly difficult for fans to distinguish between legitimate news and fabricated content.

Francesca’s quick response to debunk the false reports demonstrates the importance of celebrities and their families addressing misinformation directly on social media platforms. This helps prevent further spread of harmful rumors.
