Shinedown frontman Brent Smith recently addressed speculation about the band potentially exploring country music. He shared his thoughts in an interview with Audacy Music.
Smith was asked about the possibility of Shinedown creating country-leaning material. When questioned directly about whether having one country song might lead to entertaining a country-focused album, Smith offered a measured response.
“We’ll have to see. Again, it’s that universe. Yeah, it’s that universe thing,” Smith said.
The conversation then shifted to country artist Jelly Roll. Smith shared his perspective on the musician’s rise to prominence.
“Even when, you know, we met him [Jelly Roll] there was just a lot of people that scratched their head at it and you know the way that we saw it was he was so engaging and real like just a real person,” Smith explained. “And people talk about like, you know, well, that was like an overnight thing. And it’s like, no, man. This guy has been, his entire life has been leading up to this moment or these moments.”
Smith continued his praise for Jelly Roll. He emphasized the artist’s dedication and influence.
“And that’s why he’s so like locked in on everything cuz he’s, you know, he has trained for this. And, you know, he’s an amazing influence on a lot of people all over the world,” he added.
Smith’s comments about genre exploration reflect Shinedown’s long history of musical versatility. They also show the band’s willingness to experiment with different sounds throughout their career.
The band has consistently evolved their sound since forming in Jacksonville, Florida in 2001. Wikipedia noted that Shinedown’s music has been described as hard rock. The band incorporates elements of alternative metal, post-grunge, and arena rock into their compositions. This musical flexibility has allowed them to maintain relevance across multiple rock subgenres over more than two decades.
Smith’s journey as Shinedown’s frontman began in his youth. It was shaped by diverse musical influences. Shababeek reported that Smith grew up in a musical family and was inspired by artists such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and Metallica. He attended local high school where he participated in various musical activities. This early exposure to both Southern rock and heavy metal helped form the foundation for Shinedown’s genre-blending approach.
The band’s willingness to cross musical boundaries has been evident in their recent work and live performances. Dailymotion documented that Shinedown joined Audacy for a special live session to celebrate the release of their latest single “Searchlight.” The band discussed the making of their new music during this session. These intimate acoustic sessions demonstrate their ability to adapt their hard rock sound to different formats and settings.
Shinedown’s openness to musical exploration, combined with Smith’s respect for artists like Jelly Roll who successfully navigate multiple genres, suggests the band remains committed to artistic growth rather than being confined to traditional rock boundaries. Whether this leads to actual country material remains to be seen. Smith’s “universe thing” philosophy indicates all possibilities remain open.
