Boy George recently made a public statement about his former Culture Club bandmate Jon Moss. He addressed the drummer’s departure from the band in a comment shared on X (formerly Twitter).
The comment came in response to Culture Club’s official Christmas message that included a photo featuring Jon Moss alongside the current band members.
“I hate to correct this, but Jon [Moss, drummer] is no longer in CC [Culture Club],” Boy George said. “He tried to bankrupt me in the last couple of years, so I hope the Xmas tree falls on his head! Lol!”
The singer went on to explain how the situation affected his creative process.
“His leaving and attempts to destroy me did, however, inspire these songs,” he continued.
The original Culture Club post had shared a holiday message stating: “Sending lots of love this holiday season from all of us in Culture Club. Here’s to more music, more joy, and dancing with you again in 2026!”
This public dispute highlights the ongoing tensions between the two founding members of one of the 1980s’ most successful bands. The conflict between Boy George and Jon Moss extends far beyond recent disagreements. It has deep roots in the band’s turbulent history.
Culture Club was formed in 1981. The band quickly rose to international fame with hits like “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” and “Karma Chameleon.” Wikipedia reported that the band sold over 50 million records worldwide during their initial run, making them one of the most successful British acts of the decade. Jon Moss served as the band’s drummer from the beginning. He was instrumental in shaping their distinctive sound that blended new wave, reggae, and pop influences.
The relationship between Boy George and Jon Moss has been complicated by both personal and professional issues throughout the band’s history. Rolling Stone revealed that the two had a romantic relationship during the early years of Culture Club. This relationship ended acrimoniously and contributed to the band’s initial breakup in 1986. This personal history has continued to influence their professional relationship during subsequent reunions and tours.
Legal disputes have plagued the band members for years. Various lawsuits have been filed over royalties, band control, and financial matters. Music Business Worldwide documented that Jon Moss filed a lawsuit in 2011 seeking greater control over the band’s affairs and a larger share of royalties from their classic hits. These legal battles have created lasting animosity between the former bandmates. They have repeatedly disrupted attempts at reconciliation.
The current public feud appears to be the culmination of years of behind-the-scenes tensions and financial disagreements. Boy George’s harsh Christmas message suggests that any possibility of future collaboration between the original Culture Club lineup has been permanently severed. This leaves fans to wonder if the band will continue without one of its founding members.
