Iron Maiden has issued an official statement following the death of Paul Mario Day, the band’s original vocalist from 1975, in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter).
The band expressed their condolences and reflected on their relationship with their former bandmate in the heartfelt statement.
“We are deeply saddened that Paul Mario Day, Iron Maiden’s first ever vocalist back in 1975, has passed away,” the band said. “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to Paul’s family and friends.”
The statement continued with a personal tribute to Day’s character and their friendship.
“Paul was a lovely person and good mate,” they added. “Rest in peace Paul.”
Day’s role in Iron Maiden’s history represents a crucial chapter in the band’s early development and formation.
Fox News reported that Day was recruited by bassist Steve Harris to become Iron Maiden’s first vocalist in December 1975 at the age of 19. This marked the beginning of the band’s formation period. The period was characterized by musical experimentation as the group sought to define their sound and identity.
Vinyl Me Please noted that Day’s tenure as frontman lasted until October 1976, spanning nearly a year during Iron Maiden’s formative stage. The band was still developing the heavy metal sound that would later make them global superstars during this period.
Day continued his musical career by forming the band More after his departure from Iron Maiden, Loudwire revealed. This demonstrated his continued passion for music even after leaving what would become one of the world’s most successful metal bands.
The cause of Day’s death has not been disclosed. Fans and fellow musicians have expressed their sympathies across social media platforms. Many have remembered him not only for his contribution to Iron Maiden’s early legacy but also for his personable nature. This aligns with the band’s tribute describing him as “a lovely person and good mate.”
