Rush’s Geddy Lee recently discussed the band’s collaboration with new drummer Anika Nilles, who replaced the late Neil Peart, sharing details about their upcoming reunion tour in an interview with Rick Beato.

Lee revealed the negotiations that took place when the band wanted to add a challenging song to their setlist. He explained how they reached a compromise with their new drummer.

“We added one song, one extra song recently. And she freaked out. I knew she would freak out, but she freaked out. She said, ‘My hard drive is full.’ And this song has a lot of complicated time signature changes,” Lee said.

The band found a solution that worked for both parties. Lee explained the terms of their agreement.

“And so we made a deal. We pulled two songs out in exchange for this one song. She said, ‘Okay.’ [Laughs] But she’s up for it. And that’s a very difficult seat to sit in,” he continued.

Lee also addressed the challenges facing Nilles as she steps into the role previously held by the legendary Neil Peart.

“And some people will never forgive us for going on with somebody else. And she has the guts to sit in that seat, to accept that gig and take whatever fans are gonna dish out. And that’s not a small thing. That’s a huge thing. And it’s not out of arrogance. It’s out of confidence and respect for Neil,” Lee explained.

He emphasized Nilles’ deep appreciation for Peart’s legacy and musical contributions.

“When you hear her talk about Neil, she really understands and appreciates his greatness. And none of this that happens is diminishing his greatness by one iota,” Lee concluded.

The collaboration between Rush and Nilles represents a significant moment for the prog rock legends as they prepare to return to the stage for the first time since Peart’s passing.

Louder reported that Nilles is a German drummer, composer, bandleader, and educator who previously toured with Jeff Beck. Her extensive background in progressive and technical drumming made her a natural fit for Rush’s complex musical arrangements. The connection between Nilles and Rush came through an unexpected source. Louder noted that she was connected to the band through Jeff Beck’s guitar tech Scully, who also serves as Geddy Lee’s bass tech.

The selection process for Rush’s new drummer was carefully considered by the remaining band members. Rush Brasil revealed that Lee and Lifeson chose Nilles after meeting her in a small studio session. They focused primarily on whether the feel of the songs worked for both musicians rather than technical prowess alone. This approach reflects the band’s commitment to maintaining the emotional core of their music while moving forward without their longtime drummer.

The upcoming reunion tour marks Rush’s first live performances since Neil Peart’s death in January 2020. Peart was widely regarded as one of the greatest drummers in rock history. He left behind a legacy of intricate compositions and philosophical lyrics that helped define Rush’s sound for over four decades. His battle with brain cancer and subsequent passing left a void that many fans believed could never be filled.

Nilles faces the enormous challenge of stepping into Peart’s role while honoring his contributions to the band’s legacy. Her willingness to take on this responsibility demonstrates both her confidence as a musician and her respect for Rush’s musical heritage, despite the inevitable comparisons and criticism from some fans. The band’s decision to move forward with live performances represents their commitment to celebrating their music and connecting with fans who have supported them throughout their career.
