Van Halen drummer Alex Van Halen has been honored with knighthood in the Netherlands, as reported by Facebook. The musician received the royal decoration “Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw” (Knight in the Order of the Lion of the Netherlands), the country’s highest civilian honor, during a ceremony held in Nijmegen, the city where he and his brother Edward lived before moving to Los Angeles in 1962.
During the ceremony, Alex Van Halen reflected on the significance of the honor and the role his family played in making it happen.
“My cousin organized most of this. But I’m very grateful. I think institutions like this are important in people’s lives because it adds a dignity and a gravity to what we do. Whether it’s actually deserved or not, that’s another question,” Alex Van Halen said.
He went on to speak about the responsibility that comes with such recognition.
“But we can live up to it. That’s the whole thing, is you gotta have something to live up to,” he continued.
The knighthood recognizes Van Halen’s lasting connection to his birthplace and his contributions as a musician.
The ceremony took place on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, marking a special homecoming for the drummer. Nijmegen mayor Hubert Bruls presented the decoration at the Berchmanianum, the historic academy building of Radboud University, in a setting that underscored the deep ties between the city and the musician it once called its own.
Van Halen traveled from the United States specifically to accept the honor in person, a gesture that reflected the weight he placed on the occasion. The trip brought him back to the streets he once walked as a child, decades before Van Halen became one of the defining rock bands of a generation.
The Dutch-American drummer spent his earliest years in Nijmegen, living there from roughly age two to nine before his family relocated to the United States. That upbringing, though brief, has remained a defining part of his personal story and one that the Netherlands has now formally recognized.
Officials described the honor as recognition of his “imposante muzikale carrière,” an impressive musical career that spans more than five decades and helped shape the sound of hard rock worldwide. The knighthood cements Nijmegen’s place in Van Halen’s origin story, tying the city permanently to the legacy of one of its most famous former residents.
