Former Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland recently opened up about his new metal project Nuclear Messiah and their latest album Black Flame. The interview was featured on The CMS Metal Show.

When asked whether he consciously writes away from the Megadeth sound — given that it remains what he is most known for — Poland gave a candid and straightforward answer about where his musical identity stands today.

“You know, the last time I even thought Megadeth was when I wrote the songs for Return to Metalopoulos,” Poland said. “It was a transition period where I was like leaving Megadeth and I wanted to do a solo guitar career instrumental and so I made it heavy.”

Poland went on to describe the direction of Nuclear Messiah, emphasizing that while the project carries weight, it exists entirely on its own terms.

“And now we’re kind of heavy. We have Carlos Cruz on drums and Robbie Pagliari on bass and our songs are heavy,” he continued. “But they’re not, you know, Megadeth, you know what I mean? And I’m not Megadeth, you know? I was when I was in the band, but like, you know, that’s not my thing, man.”

Poland’s comments make clear that with Nuclear Messiah and Black Flame, he is firmly focused on forging a new musical identity well beyond his Megadeth years.

The release of Black Flame marks a significant milestone in Poland’s post-Megadeth career. It arrives as a large-scale, all-star metal effort that showcases the full breadth of his guitar vision. The album brings together an impressive roster of rock and metal veterans, underlining just how far Poland has traveled from his thrash metal origins.

Cleopatra Records noted that Black Flame was released on April 24, 2026, and described Nuclear Messiah not merely as another supergroup, but as “a metal behemoth” built around Poland’s widely revered guitar work. The album features contributions from an extensive list of notable musicians, including Marty Friedman, Dave Ellefson, Glen Drover, Shawn Drover, Chris Adler, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, Joe Lynn Turner, Sebastian Bach, Derek Sherinian, Jonathan Cain, and Ronnie Romero, among many others.

AMFM Magazine reported that the album features a spoken-word intro by actor William Shatner — a detail that speaks to the ambitious and unconventional scope of the project. Singles released ahead of the album included “Electric Burn,” “Look At Yourself,” “For Mad Men Only,” and the title track “Black Flame.”

Eddie Trunk described Nuclear Messiah as “a thunderous, all-star concept album” built around the visionary guitar mastery of Poland. The project unites 34 musicians across its tracks, making it a sweeping collaborative statement rather than a conventional solo record.

Poland’s trajectory from Megadeth to Nuclear Messiah has been a long and deliberate one. He was a key part of Megadeth’s early identity, contributing to the band’s formative years during the era of Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?, before departing amid the internal tensions and turbulence that defined the band’s volatile early history. His subsequent solo work, including the instrumental Return to Metalopolis, reflected a clear shift toward fusion and progressive guitar music. Black Flame continues to build upon that direction, albeit with a heavier and more collaborative framework than ever before.
