Back in the day, Flea lent his bass skills to Jane’s Addiction for a short stint. Although he only appeared with the band for a tour, it seems like this was enough for some fans to believe that he was the perfect fit for the band. However, Flea argued in his recent tweet that there was only one bass player for Jane’s Addiction, and it wasn’t him.
Apart from playing the trumpet in Jane’s Addiction’s debut album ‘Nothing Is Shocking,’ Flea also joined them during their 1997 reunion tour to fill in for Eric Avery, who didn’t want to rejoin the band. In one of his recent tweets, Flea posted a video of their 1997 show at the Hammerstein Ballroom with the caption, “When it was good, it was very, very good.”
“I played this one so often this summer while cooking,” said one of his followers upon seeing the video. “Doors and windows open. It makes the food even better! And, let’s face it, Flea — JA was also at its best with you there. You being there makes everything the yummiest velvet and the woodiest phattest grooves. I bow to you.”
Flea saw the fan’s tweet and decided to respond to whether he was the best fit for Jane’s Addiction. “With all due respect,” said Flea, and thanked the fan for the kind words before revealing his views. “I appreciate your support a lot, [but] the greatest and only great bass player for Jane’s Addiction is Eric Avery.”
Eric Avery didn’t want to be involved in Jane’s Addiction’s 2001 Jubilee Tour, and Flea focused on his work with RHCP. Until Avery’s return, Martyn DeNoble and Chris Chaney played bass for the band. As it appears, some fans believe Flea’s sound suited Jane’s Addiction better, but the bassist argues Eric Avery cannot be replaced.
