Former Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg recently addressed whether he has any regrets about his tenure with the band, particularly regarding how his departure unfolded in late 2023, in an interview with The Garza Podcast.
Weinberg’s comments focused on his philosophy about life’s impermanence and the importance of working hard without dwelling on regrets.
“No, no. Much has been said about it, but I don’t think living with regrets… Your trajectory, it is what it is,” Weinberg said. “And I think as long as you work your hardest, try your best and apply yourself and do things for the right reasons, I think those are the things that lead you from fulfilling moment to fulfilling moment.”
The drummer elaborated on his perspective about accepting life’s constant changes and uncertainties.
“I really believe in being in tune with the things that my friends and people who I’ve shared creative spaces with are saying,” he continued. “I saw something recently that a friend of mine said of, like, the only thing that’s consistent in life is impermanence.”
“And if you are comfortable with that, then you stand the chance of continuing your path or whatever is meant for in that sense,” Weinberg added. “And with that in mind, the idea of impermanence and this and that, it’s, like, no, I don’t regret any of these things.”
Weinberg’s philosophical approach to his departure comes after nearly a decade of service with the metal band. During this time, he made significant contributions to their discography and live performances.
Vice reported that Weinberg joined Slipknot in 2014 and contributed to three studio albums over nearly a decade of touring before his firing. His tenure with the band spanned some of their most successful years, establishing him as a key member of their rhythm section.
The circumstances surrounding his exit remain unclear to Weinberg himself. Loudwire noted that the drummer has stated that it was confusing then and remains confusing, as he still doesn’t fully understand why he was fired from the band.
The timing of his departure was particularly unexpected, as Vice detailed. The exit came without explanation after he got band approval for hip surgery between tours. He only received a manager’s call the morning after their last show together.
“It was confusing then. If I’m perfectly honest, it remains confusing,” Weinberg said of his 2023 firing from Slipknot, highlighting the abrupt nature of his departure from the band he had served for nearly a decade.
