Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy has shared his own take on the best metal albums of 2024.

The rocker shared his picks in an Instagram post, along with his favorite movies of the year. In the list he shared in no particular order, he named ten albums from ten different artists.

His picks are Opeth’s ‘The Last Will And Testament,’ Blood Incantation’s ‘Absolute Elsewhere,’ The Lemon Twigs’ ‘A Dream Is All We Know,‘ Redd Kross’ self-titled album, Leprous’ ‘Melodies of Atonement,’ Frost*’s ‘Life In The Wires,’ Neal Morse and The Resonance’s ‘No Hill For A Climber,’ Category 7’s self titled album, Kerry King’s ‘From Hell I Rise,’ and lastly, The Warning’s ‘Keep Me Fed.’

His favorite movies and series of the year included ‘Joker: Folie à Deux,’ with a comment of ‘Yes, really,’ ‘MaXXXine,’ ‘The Substance,’ ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm,’ ‘The Curse’ and ‘Squid Game.’

The drummer also didn’t forget to pay tribute to some of the legendary names who passed away this year. He started his list of names with his dog Mickey, who passed away only two weeks ago, and his sister, Samantha Cattaneo.

Portnoy completed his list after mentioning names such as Paul Di’Anno, Phil Lesh, Quincy Jones, James Kottak, Steve Albini, Jack Russell, Wayne Kramer and many more.
