Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy’s dog Mickey passed away.

The drummer took to social media to share various pictures with Mickey and shared the sad news with his fans. “My heart is completely broken. Mickey crossed the Rainbow Bridge around 3:30am last night. He was surrounded by his family (Marlene, Melody, Max & Alex by his side and me on FaceTime) and was totally at peace when he went. He was the Bestest Boi of all time.”

“I’ve never known a love for a best friend like what I had with him and he’ll be with me for the rest of my days. I take solace in knowing how peaceful he went…surrounded by all of us, and that he’s now crossing the Rainbow Bridge reunited with his beloved sister and best friend Maggie and finally getting to meet his big sister Bongo,” he added.

Portnoy has been keeping his fans updated on Mickey’s recent health struggles. The rocker recently shared that Mickey was ‘hanging in there’ but wasn’t doing well. Portnoy shared his frustration at not being able to be with him during this time.

Mickey was diagnosed with cancer last year and battled it with treatments and chemotherapy. The sad news follows the passing of his sister, Samantha Leone Cattaneo, this October. She was also fighting cancer.

“My sister had been battling Cancer all year and the last few days she took a turn for the worse…it’s been a devastating couple of days for me and my family knowing the inevitable was coming…” the rocker wrote in another post about the passing of his sister. “As hard as it was, tonight’s show went on and James dedicated ‘The Spirit Carries On’ to her…this picture is from tonight…those lights in the air were for Sam…I wept like a baby the entire time (John even came and sat beside me at my kit for the ending solo which meant so much to me…).”

“My sister was always one of DT’s biggest fans & supporters and us reuniting meant sooooooo much to her,” he continued. “She wanted so badly to be in London but her health had declined so quickly that it was impossible for her to travel. But she told me she watched some videos of the show online in the hospital and I know how happy it made her.”

Dream Theater will continue their shows as scheduled, with their most recent show taking place tomorrow night in São Paulo, Brazil.
