Dolly Parton Still Has Doubts About ‘Deserving’ Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction

Even though Dolly Parton had initially removed herself from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nomination process because she thought she hadn’t done enough to deserve it, the country icon later accepted the nomination when she found out that it meant more than she assumed. However, it seems like the singer is still not fully convinced that she earned the title, as she revealed to Hoda Kotb during a new chat.

“That’s what I felt because I don’t follow all that, you know,” Parton said when asked whether she felt unworthy of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nomination. “I’ve often done some rock and roll things or covered some rock and roll songs, but I never thought of myself as a rock star. When people say, ‘Oh, you’re a rock star,’ I knew that was just them saying, ‘You’re cool’ or whatever.”

The country singer continued, “You know how people say ‘You’re a rock star,’ but my husband loves rock and roll. I’ve just done everything in country, and I know how hard you work at your craft. When they said they wanted to put me in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, there were so many other people. I also thought that they just voted on that, and it was like that person was going to go in, and I thought, ‘I’m not taking any votes from any of these people that spend their lives doing that like I spend my life doing this.’”

After learning that the nomination was not just about being a rock star and performing in that specific genre, Parton was more relieved, but she still had doubts about deserving the title. Dolly shared, “So, I found out later that they give it to you for – if you’ve influenced other people, and I found out more about it, but I had said at the start I didn’t want to accept it because I didn’t think I’d earned it, and still ain’t sure but I thought, ‘Well, time is good,’ you know.”

Dolly Parton lastly also shared the reason behind her decision to do a rock album. “I’m about time, and I thought, ‘Well, if they are going to give it to me anyhow, I’m going to accept it gracefully, and then I’m going to go ahead and do a rock album and just make the most of it.’”

Parton thought that making a rock album would be an excellent way to live up to all that vibe regarding her being a rock star. In her upcoming record, she will be performing some original rock songs as well as the covers of several iconic tracks. The singer also has a few guest artists in her mind, including Ed Sheeran and Miley Cyrus.
