Daron Malakian Fears Making New SOAD Album Might End the Band

System of a Down guitarist Daron Malakian has expressed concerns about creating new music with the band. He fears it could disrupt their current positive dynamic, in a recent interview with Loudwire.

Malakian shared his thoughts on the band’s creative direction and internal relationships when asked about the future of System of a Down.

“I’ve got songs. I don’t have riffs, but I have songs,” Malakian said. “If the band needs them and if we need to move forward, I’ve written a lot of songs through the years that I haven’t recorded and that I’ve kept to myself.”

The guitarist explained his cautious approach to the band’s future. He emphasized his desire to maintain their current harmony.

“But I also don’t mind taking those songs to Scars on Broadway,” he continued. “I think we’re all getting along right now and I kind of want to keep it that way.”

Malakian reflected on the band’s history and the challenges that arise when business decisions enter the picture.

“I think we’ve always gotten along as friends, it’s whenever band politics about these kinds of things come into play where the friction starts,” he said. “I think we have five great records. We haven’t put out a record in a long time and people still come to our shows.”

Malakian’s hesitation about new material reflects broader challenges the band has faced in recent years regarding their creative process and internal dynamics.

Vinyl Me Please reported that Malakian recently acknowledged that he is not at the same creative place he was a decade ago. He stated that a new album would need to be “amazing” to justify the effort. This admission signals his reluctance to rush the creative process and highlights the high standards the band maintains for their work.

System of a Down continues to demonstrate their enduring popularity and commercial viability despite the uncertainty surrounding new music. Chaoszine confirmed that the band is scheduled for an active 2025 tour. The tour includes multiple stadium shows with acts like Korn, Avenged Sevenfold, and Deftones. This upcoming tour marks their busiest year since 2017 and underscores their lasting fan support even without new material.

The band’s ability to maintain relevance without releasing new music for nearly two decades speaks to the lasting impact of their catalog. WMMR noted that their six-show North American tour demonstrates that System of a Down remains a major draw in the rock music landscape. They remain capable of headlining major venues alongside other established acts.

System of a Down has not released a full studio album since 2005’s “Hypnotize” and “Mezmerize.” This makes their continued commercial success and fan loyalty particularly remarkable in an industry that typically demands regular new content.
