Gass announced that his mother, Carol June Gass, passed away on August 26th, sharing a heartfelt tribute to her life and character.

“Carol June Gass May 4th, 1930 – Aug 26, 2026,” Gass said. “Lost my dear mom today. She was funny, fiercely independent and feisty till the end.”

He continued to reflect on her legacy and the impact she had on her family.

“I feel lucky to have had her for so long,” Gass said. “She is survived by my two older brothers but she outlived about everybody else. She loved her boys and we loved her. She was always our champion and always always there for us. Thanx mom, will always remember you with fondness and love.”

Jack Black responded to the post with a message of support. “Heartbreaking,” Black commented. “Love you Kage. Love to the whole family. Star mom is with the stars now.”

This loss lands at a poignant moment for Gass and Black, whose bond has been tested and repaired over the past year.

Carol Gass had long been a visible presence in her son’s life. Gass shared affectionate tributes to her on social media in the past, once celebrating her as “a true wonder of science” for her longevity and spirit.

The mother and son’s closeness became relevant beyond family circles last year. A controversial joke Gass made about the assassination attempt on Donald Trump during a live show triggered intense public backlash. The fallout led Tenacious D to cancel their Australian tour dates and put the band’s future creative work on indefinite hold. Gass revealed at the time that the backlash had taken a personal toll, extending even to his mother, who was then 95 years old.

The rift between Gass and Black deepened in the aftermath, as Gass considered stepping away from the band altogether while Black pursued other projects. Despite the tension, the two eventually found their way back to each other. Earlier this year, Gass confirmed that he and Black had reconciled, telling fans the pair had “hashed it out” and were planning to reunite Tenacious D.

Gass is now grieving the loss of his mother. Black’s public message of support signals that the friendship between the two collaborators has moved past the discord that once threatened to end their decades-long partnership.
