Chuck Billy, frontman of Testament, recently shared his thoughts on the evolution of thrash metal vocals and how modern metal has lost some of its distinctive character in an interview with Teraz Rock.

The discussion centered on the unique vocal identities that defined the classic thrash metal era. Billy reflected on how each of the genre’s pioneers developed their own distinct sound.

When asked about the vocal differences between the biggest thrash metal bands like Metallica, Slayer, Testament, Megadeth, and Anthrax, Billy acknowledged the diversity that once defined the genre.

“Right. Totally. And I think it’s to each his own. It’s and it’s good that that’s how each band finds their own identity,” Billy said. “Today, in a lot of new music a lot of singers sound the same and a lot of bands sound the same with the vocals, you know. So that’s okay. You know, people will find their own way eventually.”

Billy also opened up about his own vocal development and the influence that shaped his technique.

“When I first started playing music, you know, I was taking lessons to be more of a melodic singer. And then when I started listening to thrash metal, it was more about tempo and singing, you know, fast on the beat. That was a different technique for me. And I found that James Hetfield was really good at that style and technique where I kind of listened to what he did, you know,” he explained.

The Testament vocalist revealed that Hetfield’s influence continues to shape his creative process to this day.

“And I think over the years I still kind of like creating songs or writing a song thinking, ‘Oh, what would James do on this riff or how would he sing this?’ So, you know, it kind of it still kind of starts there,” Billy continued.

Billy’s admiration for Hetfield’s vocal approach has been a consistent theme throughout his career. This demonstrates how the thrash metal pioneers influenced each other while maintaining their unique identities.

Chaoszine reported that Billy has openly stated he thinks about how Hetfield would approach certain vocal lines even when writing Testament songs today. This indicates an ongoing inspiration from Hetfield’s style. This influence is particularly notable in Billy’s controlled aggression, vocal pacing, and melodic phrasing that balance harsh thrash metal vocals with accessibility.

The Testament frontman’s vocal style represents a blend of traditional thrash heaviness with melodic elements. Loudwire noted that Billy’s approach merges traditional thrash metal with influences from the newer generation of metal musicians. This helps Testament stay relevant in modern metal. This technique mirrors Hetfield’s own method of combining thrash intensity with strong melodies, a hallmark of Metallica’s sound that shaped the development of modern metal vocals.

Billy’s impact extends beyond Testament. His vocal style has influenced many metal vocalists and bands in the modern era. Invisible Oranges highlighted that Billy’s ability to add death metal growls and melodic hooks to thrash vocals is seen as innovative. This further pushes the genre’s boundaries and influences newer metal acts. His technique of singing fast and heavy while maintaining melody and hooks has become a blueprint for many contemporary metal vocalists.

The interview highlights the ongoing conversation about authenticity and individuality in modern metal music. Billy’s observations serve as a reminder of the distinctive character that defined thrash metal’s golden era.
