Wolfgang Van Halen, son of the late Van Halen guitarist Eddie Van Halen and frontman of the band Mammoth, has revealed he won a five-year bet against a fan. The fan had predicted he would eventually abandon his own music to play only Van Halen songs.
The bet dates back to 2021, shortly after Mammoth released its first record. A fan named Robert Taylor had told Wolfgang that within five years he would end up performing exclusively Van Halen material. Wolfgang jokingly wagered against that claim at the time.
“August 24th 2021: The first Mammoth record just came out, we had just started touring, when this kind fella (along with many MANY others) said this,” Wolfgang Van Halen said. “I jokingly responded, threw it in my calendar and forgot about it. Today is that day.”
Five years later, Wolfgang reflected on the outcome. He expressed gratitude to his fans and reaffirmed his commitment to his own musical path.
“5 years later. What a trip,” he continued. “And yeah, this guy is a dickhead, but I just wanted to say thanks for listening and sticking with me. I’m very proud of what we’ve built here and I intend to keep going until the wheels fall off.”
He also invoked his father’s philosophy on staying true to one’s own artistic vision.
“I never planned on playing VH in any capacity when it came to Mammoth, and 5 years later I feel exactly the same,” Wolfgang said. “As my dad once said, ‘I’d rather bomb on my own than succeed with someone else’s music.’ Don’t ever let anyone tell you what you’re capable of. That’s for you to decide.”
Wolfgang closed his statement with a lighthearted gesture toward the fan who made the original bet.
“PS: If anyone knows Robert and where he’s from, let him know that a ticket is waiting for him at a show of his choice,” he said.
This declaration of independence comes at a pivotal moment for Wolfgang’s musical career. The career has been steadily building momentum away from his father’s shadow and toward an identity entirely his own.
Mammoth released its third studio album, “The End,” in October 2025. The release marked another milestone in the band’s evolution since that first record dropped back in 2021. The project has continued to grow both creatively and commercially in the years since Wolfgang first made his bet with Taylor.
Notably, Wolfgang dropped the “WVH” from the band’s name last year. The change streamlined the group’s identity to simply Mammoth. It reflected a broader shift toward establishing the band as its own entity rather than one perpetually tied to his family name.
That independence is now being put on full display on the road. Mammoth is set to embark on an extensive Summer 2026 tour in support of “The End.” The headlining run kicks off July 27 in Savannah, Georgia, alongside dates supporting Creed and additional stops across Europe and South America later in the year. The band has since expanded its schedule with 18 additional North American shows. This underscores the momentum Mammoth has built entirely on its own terms.
Wolfgang Van Halen appears to be exactly where he set out to be five years after making a lighthearted bet about his musical future. He is leading a band, and a legacy, entirely of his own making.
