In a recent appearance on ‘The View,’ Chris Tucker shed some light on an intriguing movie trivia about why music legend Prince didn’t accept a role in the 1997 sci-fi flick ‘The Fifth Element.’ The answer, it seems, had everything to do with the artist’s personal style.
Back in the day, Tucker landed the role of the eccentric Ruby Rhod in ‘The Fifth Element.’ During his chat on the show, Chris mentioned that the role was initially created with Prince in mind. The actor recounted the story of how he met Prince and the surprising reason why the musician declined the role.
Tucker shared a memory of being approached by Prince’s security at a Los Angeles club. The music icon wished to meet the actor who had played the role meant for him. Prince’s decision to pass on the part was merely about the costumes that were not up to his standards.
Chris Tucker’s words about Prince refusing to play a role in ‘The Fifth Element’ read:
“He said, ‘You played that part in ‘Fifth Element.’ I was supposed to play that part. I said, ‘For real?’ He said, ‘Well, I didn’t like the costumes. I didn’t like those.’ And I looked at him, and I said, ‘But you got your butt hanging out your pants!’ He said, ‘But this is my design, my design.'”
Prince didn’t take up the role because he wasn’t a fan of the costumes; considering his unique and daring fashion sense, he was committed to his style, and a movie wouldn’t alter his persona. However, his rejection opened the doors for Chris as he got to star in ‘Rush Hour,’ alongside Jackie Chan.
