Shinedown frontman Brent Smith has addressed the band’s musical identity and genre classification in a recent interview with Metalshop.

Smith discussed the band’s resistance to being confined to traditional rock categorization and their diverse musical influences.

“The way we look at it is Shinedown is everyone’s band,” Smith said. “So, a lot of times for years we kind of got pigeonholed in just being you’re a rock band, be a rock band. And we’re like, ‘You know what? We’re rock and roll to the bone, but that’s not all we are.'”

The vocalist elaborated on the band’s wide-ranging musical influences and their appeal to diverse audiences.

“We’re influenced by so many different cultures and different types of music that our audience is very, very vast,” he continued. “So, I think we’re not the quintessential. You can’t necessarily put us in a box of just a rock band or a metal band because there’s a lot of like there’s hip-hop influence, there’s pop influence, there’s metal influence, there’s rock influence, there’s alt influence, there’s like late ’90s influence, there’s jazz influence, there’s like all these different things.”

Smith also referenced the band’s extensive discography and upcoming projects.

“And if you really dive into all seven records, obviously we’re working on the eighth record right now,” he said. “And this new album is really all over the place. But all the songs belong on the record.”

Smith’s comments reflect the band’s journey from their Jacksonville roots to becoming one of rock’s most commercially successful acts.

Wikipedia reported that Shinedown was formed in 2001 in Jacksonville, Florida. The band has consistently evolved their sound through several lineup changes and seven studio albums to date. The band’s refusal to be categorized has proven commercially successful. They hold the record for the most No. 1 singles on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock charts with 20 hits. This reflects their significant impact on both rock and broader music scenes.

The group’s crossover appeal extends far beyond traditional rock audiences. WNY Papers noted that their 2022 album Planet Zero debuted in the top 5 on the Billboard 200. It also topped six other Billboard charts. This underscores their ability to reach diverse musical demographics.

This multi-genre approach has been central to Shinedown’s identity since their early days. The band’s willingness to incorporate elements from hip-hop, pop, metal, and jazz has allowed them to maintain relevance across different musical eras and attract fans from various backgrounds.

Their upcoming eighth studio album appears to continue this tradition of genre-blending. Smith described it as “all over the place” while maintaining cohesion as a complete work. The band is currently working on their eighth studio album.
