Banker Handcrafted Guitars has revealed that late Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds delivered one of his final recorded guitar solos on country rocker Marcus King’s recent song “Red Door.” The announcement was shared on Banker Handcrafted Guitars’ Instagram account.

The guitar company provided details about Hinds’ collaboration with The Marcus King Band during their recording sessions in Macon, Georgia.

“For those who may not know, this song you are listening to has one of the last guitar solos Brent Hinds recorded,” Banker Handcrafted Guitars announced. “He slept on the living room couch for a week (or two, whose counting) with The Marcus King Band at the house they rented down in Macon, Georgia while they were writing and recording their latest record, Darlin’ Blue at the legendary Capricorn Studios.”

The company shared additional insight into Hinds’ perfectionist approach to the recording process.

“The final song on the companion release titled ‘Red Door’ was one that Brent collaborated and performed on,” they continued. “Ever the stubborn perfectionist, he managed to do 278 takes before landing on the one he liked best. These are some photos I took while hanging out and watching it all unfold for a couple of days.”

This collaboration takes on deeper significance given the tragic circumstances surrounding Hinds’ recent passing. It also highlights his legendary status in the metal community.

Metal Injection reported that Hinds co-founded Mastodon in 2000. He served as the band’s lead guitarist and vocalist for over two decades. His departure from the band after 25 years marked the end of an era for one of metal’s most influential acts.

The recording sessions at Capricorn Studios hold particular historical weight. Revolver Magazine noted that the legendary Macon facility has been home to Southern rock icons like the Allman Brothers Band and Charlie Daniels. The studio’s rich musical heritage provided a fitting backdrop for what would become one of Hinds’ final recorded performances.

Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor recently reflected on the loss of his longtime bandmate and creative partner. “I always thought the future version would be us coming back together. It’s really sad that it’s not a possibility,” Dailor shared. His comments highlight the permanent nature of Hinds’ departure from the band.

The “Red Door” collaboration now stands as a testament to Hinds’ versatility as a musician. It showcases his ability to seamlessly blend his metal background with Marcus King’s country-rock sound. The 278 takes mentioned by Banker Handcrafted Guitars exemplify the meticulous attention to detail that defined Hinds’ approach to his craft throughout his career.
