U2 frontman Bono has revealed that the band has 25 songs prepared for their upcoming album. He shared details about the creative process in an interview with Zane Lowe.
The singer discussed the band’s prolific songwriting session and their approach to selecting material for the new release.
“I’ve been in the studio, I’ve heard these men. They’re remarkable musicians,” Bono said. “Larry has been working late. Edge said there’s 300 songs, and I’m like ‘they’re not songs, Edge’. But he said, ‘I have 25 great songs’.”
The frontman also indicated the band’s preference for a more concise album format.
“I don’t like long albums so we’re going to have to whittle it down to 15,” he continued.
This announcement comes at a significant time for the Irish rock legends. They have been navigating both creative momentum and personal challenges within the band.
U2Songs reported that the band’s next album is expected to be released sometime after the final quarter of 2025. Potential tour plans are also in the works. The extended timeline reflects the band’s commitment to perfecting their material before release.
The creative process has been particularly meaningful given recent developments with the band’s lineup. Esquire noted that drummer Larry Mullen Jr. has returned to the studio after undergoing a series of surgeries. This marks his full participation in the recording process once again.
This return to form follows U2’s recent musical activity. Marca confirmed that the band recently released new material, marking their first new songs in several years. The release has generated renewed interest in the band’s upcoming projects.
The band’s methodical approach to album creation reflects their decades-long commitment to quality over quantity. Bono’s emphasis on creating a concise 15-track album from their extensive catalog of material shows U2’s focus on delivering their most refined work yet.
