Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee has opened up about the band’s song “Fight Like A Girl” and its deeper personal meaning in a new interview.
The track was written as a collaboration with the animated film Ballerina. Its themes mirror Lee’s own experience navigating sexism in the metal industry — particularly in the wake of co-founder Ben Moody’s acrimonious departure from Evanescence in 2003, after which she was blamed and branded a diva by the media.
Lee explained the song’s origins by drawing a direct parallel between its lyrics and her own journey.
“It’s a line in the movie when the trainer is telling the main character [assassin Eve Macarro] how to get it done,” Lee said. “Because it’s not just about physical force.”
“[Men are] always gonna have that advantage on you. They’re bigger than you. But you can be clever. You can get in there, fight dirty, do what it takes. Stay the test of time, wait it out.”
Moody reflected on his exit in a 2010 Spin interview, acknowledging shared responsibility for the breakdown. “We both contributed to the resentment of the deterioration of our friendship that quickly turned into a downward spiral of animosity, conflicting opinions, and a very volatile environment,” he said.
“Fight Like A Girl” was co-written by Amy Lee alongside K.Flay, Dylan Eiland, and Tyler Bates. It was released as a single for the Ballerina soundtrack in June 2025. The film is a John Wick spinoff, and the track features prominently in its action-driven narrative — a fitting backdrop for a song rooted in themes of perseverance and fighting back against the odds.
Evanescence brought the song to their 2026 tour, debuting it live in Tampa, Florida on June 12, 2026, where it was met with a strong audience response. The band has since performed it at multiple dates across the United States, with the live setting reinforcing its message in front of crowds who have followed Lee’s career through its many turbulent turns.
The live performances have also featured notable guest appearances. Courtney LaPlante of Spiritbox and Nova Twins have joined Evanescence on stage to perform the track. The collaborations have drawn significant attention online, with footage from the shows circulating widely across social media — turning the song into a broader statement of solidarity among women in heavy music.
Lee also collaborated separately with singer Halsey for the Ballerina soundtrack, further expanding the project’s reach. For Lee, the collaboration represents more than a film tie-in. It is a continuation of the fight she has been waging since the earliest days of Evanescence — one she is now channeling openly and without apology.
