Amy Lee recently opened up about the vocal challenges she faces during Evanescence tours. She shared insights about her performance strategies in an interview with BuzzFeed.

When asked about which songs on tour are the most vocally challenging, Lee provided detailed insights into how she manages her voice throughout performances.

“I’ve learned how to pace the set list better and, if a song is easier for me, I’ll make sure and get one or two of those in between,” Lee said. “Instead of thinking, ‘This is what’s best for the momentum of the set list,’ now I’ll make decisions based on when I need a break. Maybe I’ll sit down for ‘Lithium’ for a second before we go into ‘Better Without You’ or whatever.”

The Evanescence frontwoman explained her strategy of placing demanding songs early in the show.

“I have been putting some of the hardest songs at the top of the set to get them out of the way while my voice is fresh,” she said. “Well, I’ll tell you what’s hard — ‘The Change’ is a really hard one, ‘Sweet Sacrifice’ is incredibly hard, and that’s why we only do it once in a while. ‘Better Without You’ is a difficult one; it’s just really high!”

Lee also discussed how her vocal approach has evolved over the years.

“I got better at learning when to go falsetto in a way that feels like I still mean it,” she continued. “I’m learning to flip my voice and not feel ashamed of that. When I was younger, it had to be full power all the time. Then I’d have a crappy voice by the end of the show, because I wasn’t ever willing to let it flip. Falsetto sounds really cool sometimes! Then you save up your gas when you really need it.”

Lee’s vocal challenges reflect the technical complexity that has defined her career. This complexity has made her one of rock’s most distinctive voices.

Zoe Stibi noted that Lee employs a controlled vibrato, especially on lower, fragile passages. This technique adds emotional nuance to her singing while helping preserve her voice during demanding performances. This technique has become a signature element of her vocal style. It allows her to maintain power without straining her voice.

The singer’s approach to vocal dynamics requires rigorous breath control and careful practice. Singing Carrots reported that her use of belt singing on high notes and smooth transitions between chest and head voice makes her approach to singing both technically demanding and emotionally potent. These techniques explain why songs like “Better Without You” and “Sweet Sacrifice” present such vocal challenges.

Lee’s distinctive vocal techniques enhance her emotional delivery without overwhelming the melody. Beth Roars explained that her ability to combine technical mastery with emotional expression has been crucial to maintaining her powerful performances throughout her career. This balance between technique and emotion is what allows her to deliver the intensity that Evanescence fans expect.

These vocal strategies demonstrate how Lee has adapted her performance approach over two decades of touring. She has learned to preserve her voice while maintaining the emotional impact that has made Evanescence a lasting force in rock music.
