Wolfgang Van Halen recently discussed the musical inspirations behind his latest album. He shared insights into his creative process with A Radio Rock.
When asked about the influences that shaped ‘The End’, Van Halen described a diverse range of musical touchstones that informed his work. “I’d say a lot of my influence that you hear on this record could be from the Foo Fighters or Queens Of The Stone Age, Alice In Chains, grunge-era stuff, as well as something like Nine Inch Nails and stuff like that, but definitely through a hard rock lens,” he explained. “It’s kind of just a blend of everything that inspires me.”
Van Halen also reflected on the challenges he faces during the recording process. He emphasized that vocals present the most demanding aspect of his work, as they require both technical capability and emotional authenticity. “I’d say the vocals are usually the most challenging, ’cause with the instruments, you can just restring and try again whereas with vocals, you really need to make sure you’re capable and able to do it,” Van Halen said.
“The writing process is a bit different. When you’re writing lyrics, you kind of have to mentally go to a place that you might not like to be in all the time in order to pull something that is artistically meaningful. But, yeah, I do enjoy the whole process though. Every record is its own mountain to climb, to a certain extent.”
Mammoth, Wolfgang Van Halen’s band, released their third studio album The End on October 24, 2025. The release came through I Am the Sheriff and BMG Rights Management, as reported by The Rock Pit. The album showcases Van Halen’s signature approach to songwriting and production. He wrote all the songs and performed all instrumentation and vocals himself, maintaining the solo project’s distinctive character.
The legendary 5150 studio hosted the album’s recording sessions. Michael “Elvis” Baskette produced the project, bringing together Van Halen’s creative vision with his production expertise, according to Blabbermouth. This collaboration resulted in a cohesive 10-track album with a total runtime of 39 minutes.
The album’s promotional campaign began months before the full release. Ultimate Classic Rock reported that “The End” was released as the first single on May 1, 2025. The track notably hit the Top 5 at Active Rock radio, with its music video approaching four million views. Subsequent singles followed this early success, including “The Spell” on July 9, 2025, “I Really Wanna” on September 10, 2025, and “Same Old Song” on the album release date.
Van Halen’s strategic release of these singles demonstrated his commitment to building anticipation for the full project. Fans experienced the album’s diverse sonic palette across multiple months. Each single offered a glimpse into the grunge-influenced hard rock sound that defines The End, reinforcing the musical direction Van Halen described in his recent interview.
