The drummer also revealed how Osbourne would frequently speak positively about both Dio and Appice’s brother, Carmine.

“Then, he used to talk about my brother [Carmine], saying, ‘You know, I really like your brother,'” Appice continued. “He would tell me the same things the next day, too [laughs].”

Appice further elaborated on Osbourne’s genuine admiration for Dio. He pointed to photographic evidence of their friendship.

“He used to sit down and tell me about Ronnie, too,” he said. “He really liked Ronnie and this and that, and there’s some pictures on the internet where they’re hanging out, actually. A festival, it looks like, and there’s a picture of Ronnie and Ozzy and they’re just hanging out. You know, things get blown up on the internet. You know, you don’t know the truth – really – of what’s going on.”

These revelations shed new light on one of heavy metal’s most persistent narratives about supposed rivalry between two iconic frontmen.

The perceived tension between Osbourne and Dio largely stemmed from the circumstances surrounding Dio’s entry into Black Sabbath. Louder Sound reported that Dio replaced Ozzy as Black Sabbath’s vocalist in 1979 when Osbourne left the band due to personal struggles and creative differences. This transition marked a significant shift in the band’s sound and direction. Dio brought his operatic vocal style to contrast Ozzy’s raw approach.

The collaboration between Dio and Black Sabbath proved highly successful. It produced acclaimed albums like “Heaven and Hell” in 1980. Metal Injection noted that this period saw the band achieve both commercial success and critical acclaim. Many considered it a creative renaissance for Black Sabbath. The success of Dio’s tenure with the band may have contributed to speculation about potential resentment from Osbourne.

However, the relationship between the two singers was more complex than public perception suggested. Both vocalists worked with Black Sabbath at different periods. Louder Sound revealed that they maintained mutual respect despite the media’s tendency to portray their relationship as adversarial. The supposed feud became a popular narrative among fans and music journalists. It often overshadowed the actual dynamics between the two musicians.

Appice’s firsthand account provides valuable insight into the private conversations and genuine feelings that existed behind the scenes. His position as a drummer who worked closely with both artists gives his testimony particular credibility in dispelling these long-held misconceptions about one of heavy metal’s most famous supposed rivalries.
