Mastodon bassist Troy Sanders has opened up about the emotional meaning behind the band’s new song, as reported via Instagram.

Sanders explained that his lyrics in the track, “Your Ghost Again,” serve as a direct tribute to late guitarist Brent Hinds. He detailed the personal significance of the words he chose for the song.

“My portion of the song, lyrically, is all about Brent, and for Brent,” Sanders said. “The bridge lyrics for example, it’s two lines of pure gratitude towards Brent.”

He then broke down the specific meaning behind those lines, drawing on the shared history between the two musicians.

“‘It’s all the gifts from you. Now you can take them back where you must go,'” he continued. “Meaning you came into my life, you exposed me to things that blew my mind. Together we conquered thousands of stages around the world, had magical moments that we can never repeat again.”

Sanders went on to reflect on the lasting impact Brent had on his life, framing the song as a celebration rather than simply a farewell.

“But all the beauty that you brought in still remains, always will,” he said. “And it’s just a line of gratitude for the first song that we’re going to release because that’s important that we include Brent.”

“Your Ghost Again” marks Mastodon’s first release following the passing of Brent Hinds. The band chose to honor his legacy through their music.

The song carries even greater weight when placed against the tragic circumstances of Hinds’ death and the turbulent final chapter of his time with the band he helped build from the ground up.

As Vice reported, Hinds died on August 20, 2025, at the age of 51. A BMW SUV driver failed to yield and struck him while he was riding his Harley Davidson through a four-way intersection in Atlanta. His death came just five months after he had departed from Mastodon in March 2025, making the loss all the more difficult for his former bandmates to process.

AOL noted that Hinds was a founding member of Mastodon, having been with the band since its formation. His departure and subsequent passing left a profound void in the group, one that “Your Ghost Again” appears to directly address.

The song’s origins are rooted in a deeply personal experience shared by another member of the band. Vice also reported that drummer and vocalist Brann Dailor, who co-wrote the track, revealed it was inspired by his recurring visions of Hinds in the studio. He described the haunting feeling of seeing his former bandmate “out of the corner of your eye” before realizing he was gone.

In a separate post on Instagram, Dailor confirmed that Mastodon’s ninth studio album is finished, suggesting “Your Ghost Again” is just the beginning of a larger body of work that will carry Hinds’ memory forward. The band appears determined to continue, while ensuring that the man who helped shape their sound remains a central part of their story.
