Tom Morello recently discussed the challenges of organizing Ozzy Osbourne’s farewell show. He shared his insights in an interview with KLOS radio show.
The guitarist served as musical director for the “Back To The Beginning” farewell show. He reflected on what he considered the most significant obstacle in putting the event together.
When asked what the biggest challenge was in organizing the farewell show, Morello emphasized the importance of honoring the legacy of heavy metal.
“Well, I suppose the biggest challenge was just doing it justice,” Morello said. “Heavy metal is the music that made me love music and Black Sabbath invented heavy metal.”
The musician explained his approach to the responsibility. He highlighted the personal significance of the project.
“So when I was tapped by Ozzy and [his wife and manager] Sharon to be the musical director, I took it really, really seriously and used all of my love of the genre and curatorial abilities to try to make something that was,” he continued. “The goal was very, very simple from the beginning, is to make it the greatest and most important day in the history of heavy metal, and all reports are that we did pretty well.”
Morello’s ambitious vision for the event reflected the monumental significance of what would become a historic farewell for one of metal’s most iconic figures.
The massive concert took place on July 5, 2025, at Villa Park in Birmingham, England. The venue was strategically chosen for its proximity to where Black Sabbath was formed in 1968. Wikipedia reported that the ten-hour event featured fourteen supporting acts including Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, Tool, Pantera, and Alice in Chains. Each band blended covers of Black Sabbath and Ozzy songs with their own material.
The show’s structure built toward a climactic finale. Ozzy performed the penultimate set before returning with Black Sabbath to close the event. This arrangement created what American Songwriter described as a historic moment for metal fans worldwide. The event marked both Ozzy’s final performance and a reunion of the legendary band.
Morello’s attention to detail extended to personally recruiting key performers for the lineup. Guitar World noted that he specifically invited former Ozzy guitarist Jake E. Lee to participate. Morello believed the event could not happen without him.
“There’s going to be a thing, an original Sabbath performance and Ozzy Osbourne’s final performance. I can’t see this going on without Jake E. Lee in there somewhere,” Morello told Lee during their phone conversation. This highlighted his integral role in assembling the comprehensive lineup.
The success of “Back To The Beginning” stands as a testament to Morello’s curatorial vision and his deep respect for heavy metal’s foundational artists. The event created what many consider a fitting farewell to one of the genre’s most influential performers.
